Don’t let the cute, quaint and coloured cottages and houses that line the lush green banks of the Neckar River fool you…underneath this romantic veneer lies one of the most happening, liberal (not to mention beautiful) cities in Germany.
Home to one of the best science and technology Universities in the world, Heidelberg is very much a student city, and once the sun goes down and the day tripping tourists have gone home, the the narrow streets fill with students who often party on until the sun comes up. The United States also has a large military base near by and the people stationed there are always up for a good time.
Sights and Activities
Schloss Heidelberg (Heidelberg Castle)
Perched on the hill above the castle is one of the most romantic castles in Germany – Scholss Heidelberg. Most of the castle was destroyed during a French siege of the city during the 17th century however you can still walk around the castle and its gardens for great views over the Neckar River Valley. The castle is also home to what is reputed the be the biggest wine barrel in the world as well as a pharmaceutical museum.
Although there is a distinct lack of big clubs, Heidelberg is home to over 300 bars and clubs with something for everyones tastes.
