Literally meaning ‘The Island of Women’, Isla Mujeres is a small island in the Caribbean just of the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, near Cancun.

The Spanish named the island ‘Isla Mujeres’ because of the temple to Goddess of the Moon built by the Mayans on the island – her image was absolutely everywhere and even though men lived on the island, the Spanish called it the Island of Women.

Measuring only 7km long and 650 meters wide (4.3 miles long by 2100 feet wide) people travel to the island to experience it’s pristine, white, sandy beaches as well as some of the best snorkeling and diving in Mexico.

Golf carts and motor scooters are the most common local forms of transportation while people who travel to the island also enjoy Playa del Norte and Playa los Cocos as well as shopping on Hidalgo Street and the fantastic local sea food.

Its well worth taking a tour of El Garrafon National Marine Park on the edge of Isla Mujeres where you have the opportunity to dive and snorkel on the reef and sometimes the chance to swim with dolphins. The bird sanctuary of Contoy Island is also within easy reach of Isla Mujeres.
