jungfrau mountain

by – loulou, Tour Manager, Europe

Jungfrau mountain is one of the highest peaks in Switzerland. We take the steepest cable car cog railway (a special invention by the Swiss specifically for high altitude train journeys just like this one) to the top of the peak; and it is like walking into heaven.

Up there is another world, crisp white snow and stunning 360 degree views. Often we end up having the highest snowball fight, the highest conga line through the ice palace, and someone does the highest nudey run. You can send the highest postcard, use the highest ATM, have the highest coffee, even have the highest husky dog ride is the weather permits.

This is 127CHF, which is only around 80 Euro, and considering transport is one of the most expensive parts of a stay in Switzerland, its not that expensive. This will fulfill your “must do before I die” experience of a lifetime, when i first came to Switzerland I didn’t go up, regretted it the moment we left and it took 2 years before I was able to come back. Thats a long time to regret!

Without a doubt my favourite optional to do is going up the Jungfrau mountain in Switzerland.

We stay at the most picturesque campsite in Europe which is in the beautiful swiss village of Lauterbrunnen, surrounded by amazing swiss alps and stunning waterfalls. When you think it doesn’t get any prettier than being nestled at the base of the Swiss Alps, we take you on a stunning train ride on Europe’s tallest cog rail train through Swiss villages and up the Swiss Alp range call The Jungfrau (which means young virgin). The photos on the train ride are awesome, bright blue skies bounce of the snow capped mountains.

Sun Glasses and hats are needed! When you get to the top of the Jungfrau you really feel like you are on the top of the world. The top is blanketed in snow and I normally head outside and have a snowball fight or make a snow angels with my group. Sometimes this is the first time that people have seen or played in snow which is always such a laugh and awesome to be apart of.

You can take hundreds of photos at the top of the Jungfrau and they are all stunning. Don’t forget to wear your Swiss hat or t-shirt which really stands out in the fluffy white snow. You can spend as long or as little up the mountain as you like.

Why not go snow disking, or sometimes they have husky dog rides or even check out the ice palace inside the mountain. It’s really an awesome day in one of the worlds most beautiful places.

Everyone that comes back from the Jungfrau, raves about it and said it’s worth every Swiss Franc. I definitely suggest you don’t miss the chance to go up the Swiss Alps while you are in Switzerland!!

  10. although it’s quite cold in the tunnels on the way out to the mountain from the cog rail station, out in the snow in July/aug it’s quite balmy! you can do with a tshirt quite easily on a fine day!
Beautiful views on the way up the mountain – cog rail stops several times on the way up at viewing platforms.
Try taking a couple of beers with you – the high altitude really lowers your tolerance!! Easy does it!

  11. Um.. I have a question: How cold is it going to be on the mountain? Would a hoodie (or fleece), jeans and a toque be enough? (like what the girls are wearing in this picture?)
And, if it makes a difference- July/Aug time

  12. Jungfrau has free tobogganing and you can hit golf balls of the side of the mountain! They have lots of other snow like activities as well.

The only downside is the, although gorgeous, 2 hour train ride each way – but definately worth it!
