Lucerne (German: Luzern) is a beautiful town on the edge of Lake Lucerne in Central Switzerland and like the rest of the country, Lucerne is small but beautiful.
As well as the natural surroundings for which the country is so famous, the A-framed chalets on the foothills and painted facades of the buildings in town add to the charm of this quaint and beautiful Swiss town.
Mountains
Many summer tours staying only one night in Lucerne still have the opportunity to take in the awe of the alps from atop the Stanserhorn just outside of Lucerne. Other tours however may also have to opportunity to visit the nearby Mt Pilatus. Some tours spending two nights in at the highest hotel in Europe atop the summit of Pilatus – over 2000 meters above sea level.
Please Note: The weather in Switzerland can change very quickly, particularly in the Alps. Mountain excursions,
including Mt Pilatus,
can sometimes be canceled due to poor or dangerous weather.
Lake Lucerne
Formed in the ice age by an ancient glacier, the lake can reach depths of over 700 feet. The crystal clear fresh water is home to swans, ducks and fish. Some summer tours offer a cruise on the lake as an optional excursion.
Nightlife
Although quiet, serene, peaceful and breathtakingly beautiful during the day, this deceptive veneer can often be pealed back after the sun sets and a wide variety of bars and clubs can be found throughout the small town.
Shopping
Lucerne has a great mix of retail shopping in a very small area. As Switzerland is not part of the European Economic Zone (They’re neutral…) prices are often a little cheaper than the rest of Europe.
Watches, timepieces and clocks are one thing that the Swiss are famous for. Rolex, Longines, Tissot, Omega, Tag, Swiss Military, Swatch….. The list of who’s who in the world of timepieces starts and ends in Switzerland. Lucerne provides a plethora of shopping watch shopping opportunities but you would be very hard pressed to find more inexpensive shopping than ‘Ruttimans’ in Lucerne.

Lucerne is NOT cheap at ALL. Out of all the countries I’ve been to in Europe, Swiss is one of the most expensive!!! You will NOT find dollar menu Mc Donald’s here. The cheapest souvenir we were able to buy was a key chain for 20 francs. Amazing country but VERY VERY EXPENSIVE
