Manners and Customs - Austria
Last Updated: 7th Jun 2012

No Matter where you travel, it’s always best to understand a little of the language, manners and customs of your host country in order to be polite and respectful to the locals. A few of these hints and tips may help you out as you tour through Austria while it’s also helpful to know a little German (Austrians speak various dialects of German).
Contiki’s tour managers live and work in Europe full time and are also on hand to help you out throughout your tour.
- Austrians are generally very polite and proper people and please, thank you, hello and goodbye are important
- English is widely spoken and accepted
- If a 10 -15% service charge is added to your bill it is polite to only leave small change as a tip, otherwise 10-15% tip for service is appreciated
- The Austrians take excellent care of their environment and you should take care to help them recycle. There are very strict laws that enforce recycling and these should be adhered to

An excellent share! I have just forwarded this onto a colleague that has been conducting a tiny study on this. And he actually bought me breakfast due for the reality that I uncovered it for him… lol. So allow me reword this…. Thanks for the meal!! But yeah, thanx for spending some time to discuss this topic below on the web website page.

Right here is the right website for anybody who really wants to understand this topic. You understand so much its almost tough to argue with you (not that I personally would want toHaHa). You definitely put a fresh spin on a topic that’s been written about for ages. Excellent stuff, just wonderful!
