Mexico City is the capital city of Mexico and is one of the largest an most populated cities in the world, it is home to roughly 20 million Mexicans. People travel to Mexico City because it offers all the cosmopolitan feel, culture, art, shopping, history, nightlife and mix of lifestyles that only a city of its size can offer.

The oldest parts of the city date back to the 14th Century and Mexico City was not only an Aztec capital but also the main city for the Spanish administration for what is modern day Mexico. The city came in and out of European control during the 1800’s and the Spanish and Austrian influence in the buildings and architecture only add to the diversity of the Mexican capital.

Mexico City also famously hosted the 1968 Olympic Games which again brought more fame and growth to the region.

Along with all the usual draws of a large or capital city, the diversity that is on offer in Mexico City is one of the big reasons people travel to Mexico.

The huge pyramids and sacred temples of Teotihuacan are nearby, home to the Avenue of the Dead and the Pyramid of the Sun.

Within the city itself there is a huge abundance of shopping, some of the most famous being the Xochimilco markets while for the more culturally minded the Museum of Anthropology is home to a huge collection of ancient Aztec and Oaxaca Mayan art and artifacts.

Contiki’s included Tour of Mexico City includes seeing the vast and impressive National Palace that was once home to the Presidents of Mexico. The size of the building continues to impress though as does the Zocalo square with it’s huge Mexican flag flying proudly above the square. The Chapultepec Park is also on offer providing a relaxing break for the people and hustle in the city.
