Mozat and Strauss - Vienna
Last Updated: 7th Jun 2012
Vienna has been one of Europe’s music capitals for hundreds of years and has been home to some of the most famous and most loved musicians of all time. Austria has produced the likes of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Strauss Jr. while the city has also been home to Beethoven.
Mozart, like a lot of modern musicians, lived fast and died young. A native of Salzburg, Austria, he was playing music by the time he was 4 years old and composing by 6. As a boy he performed for the Empress of Austria and in his 35 years he composed over 600 pieces of work, at his peak producing more in one year than The Beatles did in their entire career. Mozart very much broke with tradition working on commissions for many different people and also by writing his operas in German (rather than Italian) and much of his work is still very famous and popular today.
Many years later, during the 1800’s, Johann Strauss Jr. became the worlds first huge music mega-star. Strauss’ work composing waltz’s made him a musical superstar both in Europe and the USA with perhaps his most famous work being ‘The Blue Danube’. A statue of Strauss stands in Stadtpark near the Kursalon building in Vienna.
Still today, hundreds of years later, young people travel from all over Europe to work, live and study in Vienna’s music schools and academies and some of Vienna’s best young performers feature in Mozart and Stauss concerts offered as optional excursion on European Tours.
