Playa del Carmen

On the Caribbean coast of Mexico, Playa del Carmen is one of the fastest growing beach resorts in Mexico – and with good reason.

Traveling to Playa del Carmen makes for a great break after the history and city of Merida. Being in the same region of Mexico as Cancun, the Playa del Carmen is growing in popularity because it offers the same beautiful Caribbean waters and beaches without the overt tourism and craziness of Cancun.

Apart from the beautiful beach, the main activity occurs around Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue) where the pedestrian-only street is filled with restaurants, shopping, bars and hotels.

Like Cannes in France, the local government has tried to maintain the original small-town feel and most of the town closes down before mid-night. There are however bars and clubs to be found in the back streets of the town as well as along the pristine white sandy beaches.
