Manners and Customs
- In the North of Spain, particularly in the regions of Catalonia (in particular Barcelona and the Basque region, around Pamplona, people are fiercely independent and see themselves as being Catalan and Basque rather than Spanish. Although people generally understand Spanish, you will be better received if you speak a few worlds in the local language and refer to people as ‘Catalan’ or ‘Basque’ rather than ‘Spanish’.
- Siesta is still a big part of not only Spanish, but Mediterranean culture. Although many smaller businesses may observe Siesta, larger stores, (particularly retail) will stay open during the middle of the day. Siesta can run from around 11 in the morning until about 3 in the after noon.
- Spanish lifestyle is very relaxed and due to siestas, it is common to eat meals late into the evening or even into the early hours of the morning, particularly during the summer months. It is common to see families with small children eat a main meal at 10 or 11 o’clock in the evening.
