Be sure to go to the Peabody Hotel to watch the march of the ducks. Get there around 4:30 in the afternoon to get a good spot and bring your camera, you’ll want to get a picture of this!

In 1933 the general manager of this ultra-posh hotel in downtown Memphis had a little too much to drink and decided to let a few live ducks swim around in the fountain inside the swanky hotel lobby. The ducks became an instant hit with hotel guests and the ducks were allowed to stay.

Remarkably, although they are free to do as they wish, they never leave the confines of the hotel fountain and eventually became so popular that they were given their own luxury suite on the roof of the hotel.

Every morning at 11am the hotels ceremonial Duck Master leads the ducks on their march from their ‘duck palace’ on the roof, into the elevator to the ground floor where the red carpet is literally rolled out for them to walk across to the fountain. They spend the day doing whatever it is ducks do and then again at 5pm in the evening, the Duck Master returns to lead them back up to their rooftop palace.

Crowds usually line the red carpet for the march of the ducks and it is certainly one of the quirkier sights to be seen as you tour and travel the USA.

  1. we had no idea what to expect when we rocked up to the Peabody Hotel…...the hotel was packed it was late afternoon and everyone was standing around watching these ducks just swim around the fountain – next thing a red carpet was unrolled and the ducks marched through the crowd to the Cotton March…..ITS AWESOME !!! LOVED IT the ducks get looked after better then me hahaha they live at “Duck Palace’ on the hotel roof. Every day at 11 a.m., they are led by the Duckmaster down the elevator to the Italian travertine marble fountain where they laze about all day till the afternoon
