Understanding your itinerary
Last Updated: 7th Jun 2012
We’ve put together this guide in order to help you understand your itinerary and whats included in your tour or vacation better.
More in-depth descriptions of some of the terminology used in our itineraries and tour descriptions to help give you a better understanding of what it all means.
‘Meet your Contiki Crew’
This suggests there will be a time and place where you can not only meet the Contiki Crew before the start of your tour but also meet the other travelers that will be on your tour. Often this also means there will be a pre departure meeting.
‘Perhaps’ or ‘join us’ and ‘why not’
These terms suggest an activity that is part of the itinerary but at extra cost (for example a museum, gallery or show) or sometimes an optional excursion or activity that is not included in the tour cost.
It’s not just the destinations that are part of the travel experience, getting there can even be more amazing than the place you are going and no mater where in the world you travel with Contiki, you will see some spectacular and amazing scenery. On any given day you may travel through soaring alps, azure blue coastal areas, romantic rolling hills and villages, the indescribable colours of a desert or the lush green of a forest and a scenic drive often suggests even more spectacular or unique scenery than usual.
To see something is exactly what is sounds like – you will get to lay eyes upon and look at whatever it is you are ‘seeing’ either by driving past or stopping and seeing it as part of a sightseeing tour.
‘Sightseeing tour’ or ‘orientation tour’
This suggests an included tour by your Tour Manager or Local Guide of the major sites of the place you are visiting.
Tours vary in length depending on the city and the individual style of your Tour Manager or Guide and are designed to show you all the most important sights and get you orientated in a place seeing and hearing about the major sights as well as hints and tips with getting around and making the most of your free time. Like all aspects of any Contiki Tour, you don’t have to take part if you don’t want to.
‘Time to explore’ and ‘free time’
‘Time to explore’ and ‘free time’ suggests exactly that – free time to explore and do your own thing. During this time there are no included or optional excursions, sightseeing or activities scheduled for your tour.
Your Tour Manager will often suggest activities and experiences you may like to participate in during this time and the amount of free time you have will vary depending on the city and specific itinerary.
‘Treat yourself’ or ‘the chance to’
This suggests an activity or experience that is not included in the price of your tour. Often these are suggestions on how to spend your free time or sometimes the offer of an optional excursion you may wish to participate in. Like all aspects of any Contiki Tour, these are merely suggestions for what to do with your free time, and as always, the choice is yours!
This suggests an included piece of sightseeing with the ability to go inside, spend time, on, in, around or to touch and feel whatever it is you are ‘visiting’. If there is an entry fee for whatever it is you are ‘visiting’ entry is included in your tour.
Once your tour has commenced, your accommodation is included in the tour price. Contiki uses a wide variety of accommodation depending on the style of tour and the region of the world the tour is being operated in.
Your itinerary states the style of accommodation used for that evening at the end of the itinerary description for that day. Contiki operates budget tours but makes an effort to ensure value for money accommodation that allows you to better appreciate the places you stay.
Please note: These are some examples of the accommodations Contiki generally uses and there is no guarantee that every tour will stay in the lodgings listed. You should check your Contiki travel documents for confirmation of your accommodations and all accommodation may be subject to change.
- Adriatic Ferry
- Baltic Ferry
- Contiki Special Stopover
- Contiki Village
- Country Homestead
- Eco Lodge
- Outback bush camp
- Overnight Cruise on the Milford Wanderer
- Youth Hotel
Meals included in the tour prices are shown at the end of each tour day description in the itinerary as:
(B) – Included breakfast
(L) – Included lunch and
(D) – Included dinner.
Many of our itineraries also include optional excursions that are scheduled as part of the itinerary but are at extra cost to the tour price. As the name suggests, these activities and excursions are optional and there is absolutely no obligation for you to participate.
‘Your tour ends after breakfast’
As much as you probably won’t want it to, the tour has got to end some time. On some tours, your tour may ‘end after breakfast’.
When your tour ends after breakfast you have an included breakfast that morning at your Contiki hotel and what you do with yourself after that is entirely up to you.
If you are leaving the hotel, you will have the morning in the hotel and check out at whatever time the hotel specifies.
You may plan to make your way to the nearest airport and head home, continue onto your next destination or simply stay longer and enjoy more of your final tour city.
The itinerary for you final evening of tour will vary depending on the tour and the city but again, like all Contiki Tours you have the freedom to do what you like, even leave the evening before if you like.

There is certainly a lot to learn about this subject. I really like all of the points you’ve made.
Thanks, this article helps a lot! One thing that is still unclear to me – what time is breakfast & dinner served?
definately a great article. :)
Great article.. especially with tricky and somewhat misleading terminology. At least you know what you’re getting now!
