Uxmal is an archaeological site in Yucatan, Mexico, just outside the modern day city of Merida. The city of Uxmal was part of the ancient Mayan Empire and may have been a rival city to the much larger Chichen Itza.
Many of the buildings, temples and pyramids were built between 700 and 1100 AD, the Mayan still lived here up until the Spanish colonized Yucatan.
Perhaps the most famous (and also tallest) ruin at Uxmal is the massive ‘Pyramid of the Magician’ – also known as ‘El Adivino’. The pyramid gets this name from ancient Mayan legend that has it that a Mayan magician-god built the pyramid in only one night. Another myth has it that the pyramid was built by a dwarf who was hatched out of an egg by an old woman. Archaeologists maintain however that the pyramid was constructed over a period of 400 years.
The whole site is total a UNESCO World Heritage Site and people travel to Uxmal to not only see the Pyramid of the Magician, but also to get a feel for the amazing ancient culture of the Mayan.
