On Contiki tours, the border crossing from Thailand to Laos is done at Chiang Khong (Thailand) – Huay Xai (Laos). It is possible to get a Laos Visa on arrival at this location.
To obtain the visa, all that is required is a passport with 6 months validity, 2x passport photographs, payment of visa fee and to complete a form (available at the checkpoint).
Ask your Tour Manager if you need to obtain these while on tour.
The amount of the visa fee is dependent on the nationality. Here is an example of some of the prices for the Laos Visa on arrival:
Except those above mention countries visa fees would be USD$30.
There also an additional USD$1 fee payable for processing done on a Saturday, Sunday or on a Public Holiday.
Local and limited foreign currency can also be used to pay for visas, but this is strongly discouraged as currency exchanges at the border can offer unfavourable exchange rates. Many currency exchanges in regional parts of Asia will not change local currency into USD – this can usually only be done at airports. It is suggested that you obtain USD before you travel to pay for this visa. Credit cards, personal check, travellers checks will generally not be accepted.
Some Asian nationalities are exempt for the Lao PDR visa. More information can be found at the Loa PDR Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.
Your passport must have at least six months’ validity remaining when you arrive in Laos. Failure to obtain all necessary visas could cause you to miss part of your tour and may result in you incurring considerable expense and inconvenience.
