A Concept or Budget Tour is all about mixing it up, so get ready to stay in everything from hotels and cabins to hostels and special stopovers!

What’s a Special Stopover?

It’s accommodation that’s exclusively for Contiki travellers and managed by our crew. We choose unique, traditional places in fantastic locations, like a 16th century French Chateau, a Swiss Chalet and an Austrian Gasthof. Sound like these unique accommodations could add some flair to your holiday? Read on for more details about each of Contiki’s Special Stopovers.

  12. I did the Ultimate European in 2004 and had a great time. The accomodation varies, but on the whole is really good. The cabins in Paris are quite small and it’s difficult to get two people plus bags in comfortably. The Chateau is lovely, although I would argue that the climb for the picnic is NOT a small hill! Hopfgarten and the Swiss Chalet are also fantastic. I really liked the hotel in Corfu. I wasn’t in the main part, but the rooms were big and it was nice to be in a quieter part. The main problem in Venice was that it rained really heavily and I got drenched going from my cabin to the showers. I got bed bugs or something in the cabins in Rome and ended up having to go to a Greek hospital (not something I ever want to repeat!). I hated the hostel in Munich..the room was ok in itself, but was covered in anti-British graffitti which I found really offensive. The eastern European accomodation was fine..it ranged from KGB-looking tower blocks, to amazing 19th century opulence and modern hotels. Mostly the bathroom facilities were clean, although at some of the campsites you’re sharing with lots of people so I’d recommend flip flops for the showers.
