5 Things You've Just Gotta Do: Las Vegas Edition

What happens in Vegas shows up on Facebook

1) Hit the slots.
Okay, so even if you’re not a gambler, go anyways and play the penny slots (word to the wise – you’ll never win on those). Casinos in Las Vegas are like another world and they line the Strip just waiting for you to come in and get lost in their sea of gaudiness. There are a few, however, that pride themselves on aesthetics – hit up the gorgeous Cosmopolitan for modern interior design that includes giant draping chandeliers and glass staircases. Best part? Vegas casinos serve free cocktails to all gamblers, so even if you are rocking those penny slots, you can have a few drinks on the house.

2) Eat like a king and queen at the epic buffets.
Buffets are to America what pubs are to Britain – a staple to the landscape of the country. Much like all things Vegas, the hotel buffets are bigger, better and so much more extravagant than anywhere else. Basically, Vegas does the buffet scene very well. You can pop in to the traditional favourite, Buffet at The Bellagio, or opt for the $17 million 600-seat Bacchanal Buffet at Caesar’s Palace. My fave? Wicked Spoon at the Cosmopolitan. Not only is it modern and mega tasty, but the selection is unsurpassed and they offer individual portions of big dishes - mini mac ‘n’ cheese is just too cute!

3) Stay up ‘til 3 am with the non-stop nightlife.
Vegas is known for going above and beyond in any way possible, and the city’s nightlife is a perfect example of that. Travellers on Contiki’s trips to Vegas cruise the Strip in a limo at sundown, toasting to the night with a glass of bubbly before hitting the town with fellow travellers. The nightlife options are endless, whether you want to take in one of the many world-class shows or would rather dance the night away at any of the city’s famous clubs. Sip on a cocktail 55 floors high overlooking the city at the Palms’ open-air Ghostbar or head to XS at the Wynn with David Guetta and Avicii as resident DJs.

4) Get your shop on at a number of outlet malls.
If shopping is your thing, there’s no better place to snag a deal than Vegas. Designer duds go for 50-70% off at the city’s several outlet malls, only a 10-minute cab ride from the Strip. The city houses two premium outlets, one north and one south, the north being the better choice in my opinion. Here you’ll find seriously discounted goods from Kate Spade, Diesel, Lacoste, Tory Burch, Ted Baker and Nike just to name a few. Perfect place to do all of your Christmas shopping!

5) Soak up the sun at the luxe hotel pools.
Listen up – Vegas is hot. And we’re not talking a warm summer day here, people. The city sits in the middle of a desert, for crying out loud. With a dry heat that reaches an average of 41 degrees Celsius in July, you’ll need an escape and the hotel pools are the perfect place to lounge and plunge. Try the Palms Resort Hotel pool for young partygoers or the Garden of the Gods Pool Oasis at Caesar’s for swim-up blackjack tables. Keep an eye on the hotel event listings, too, as Vegas pools are known to attract some of the world’s hottest DJs for epic day-long dance parties. Rehab at the Hard Rock Hotel is a 3-acre Tahitian pool extravaganza, with their Sunday pool parties having now become an institution in Vegas.
