Behind the scenes with … JONAS

An interview with Contiki’s videographer!

You guys probably don’t want to hear this, but Contiki has a resident videographer. Yes, yes, it’s actually someone’s job to jet around the world capturing footage of gorgeous Contiki folk having the time of their lives exploring the world. SIGH!!!

Contiki: What inspired you to become a video director?

Jonas: I started using a camera when I was 12. My friend and I would make short films about war and the evolution of man and edit them on VHS!

Contiki: Where’s the best place you’ve ever travelled to?

Jonas: Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland and Petra in Jordan.

Contiki: What’s been your career highlight or what’s the piece of work you’re most proud of?

Jonas: It’s actually something I did for the Queensland Government! I loved the humour and the typography; it might not be so relevant now, but at the time it was really on trend. For Contiki, it’s definitely the shot on the front of the Europe Summer 2013-2014 brochure.

Contiki: What’s the best thing about working for Contiki?

Jonas: I have two pages left in my passport! But more importantly, I’m not selling McDonalds. I went on my first overseas trip when I was 19 and I’m an incredibly passionate traveller. I think travel is the greatest thing a person will do in their entire life and I love that I get to work on that.

Contiki: Any crazy / weird / amazing story that’s happened on the job with Contiki?

Jonas: There was one particular day in Greece. It was absolutely critical we got footage of 3 people jumping off a boat but this almighty storm rolled in; supposedly the biggest storm to ever hit Corfu! Just at the right time, the skies opened up, everything turned clear and still and the water looked perfectly turquoise like we needed it. I had to tread water for about 45 minutes but we got the shot in the end!
