Cole’s Diner, Los Angeles

LA’s oldest diner.

Coles-detail_full_for_exchange

Cole’s, in LA’s Downtown district, is in a strange area, but is a little oasis.

Off the road in almost-Skid Row, Cole’s is a dimly lit, mahogany-coloured, classic diner. You can sit in a booth or at the bar and enjoy beers and their famous French-dipped sandwiches.

These French-dipped sambos are something else, buddies. A hot roll with thinly sliced beef inside that’s served with a bowl of jus from the meat. This is heavy eating. But you have to try it – unless of course you’re vegetarian.

If you miss dinner though, don’t panic. Cole’s is open pretty late and will serve drinks into the wee hours.

Cole’s is at 118 E 6th Street, Los Angeles.
