Garrett McNamara broke the world record for the largest wave ever surfed, by managing to stay upright on an epic wave in Nazare, Portugal that experts guessed was almost 90 feet tall. (The previous record holder was Mike Parsons in 2008 when he rode a 77-foot wave.)
Apparently the Guinness Book of World Records people weren’t 100 percent sure, but have just awarded Hawaiian-based, 44-year-old McNamara the world record after deciding the wave was 78 feet.
