Hollywood, California used to be Hollywoodland.
The 45-foot tall letters on the Hollywood Hills was erected back in 1923 as an advertising campaign to sell property in the city.
During the ‘40s the “land” part of the sign was taken down so that it was no longer an advertisement, but simply a big “Hooray!” for the town.
