With New York Fashion Week just behind us (September 6th – 13th, duh) the industry is buzzing with recaps of new designers who have caught the attention of the fashion world at this year’s event. Style.com, the American Vogue online, was very quick with its predictions and from a list of 11 names, has said that New York designer, Jonathan Simhkai, is of particular note. His sporty line-up has been described as ‘surfer-inspired gear that gets the fashion treatment’ but to us, it’s simply ‘love.’
Simkhai was born and raised in New York and his love affair with fashion began at 14yrs when he worked in a clothing store assisting and honing his skills as a Buyer. He later went on to study at the esteemed ‘Parson’s New School for Design’ and ‘FIT’, before launching his first women’s wear collection under his name in 2010.
The designer describes his collections as seeing ‘gender lines blurring the reals of fashion and sexuality’, so you can expect quite androgynous pieces such as wide leg trousers, shirts and oversized blouses, that are brought to life with a beautiful print or fabric. Simhkai creates sexy and feminine silhouettes with only the finest of materials and plays with cashmere, wool, cotton and silk, to create different effects.
Jonathan Simhkai Resort 2013 boasts a colour palette of soft pastels contrasted with midnight blue and black, and showcases a striking collection of high-waisted silk trousers, tailored shorts, maxi dresses and camisoles. The collection has a ‘bedroom feel’ about it through styling slouchy trousers and tops with oversized wrap jackets. Simhkai will present his latest collection at NYFW on September 8th at MADE at Milk Studio’s, and attendees have been told to expect a full board of shorts and shifts – translated, of course, in a way that only this designer knows how.
Jonathan Simkhai has been hailed by the fashion world as ‘a designer to watch’, and his collections have already appeared in the likes of Marie Claire, ELLE, Vogue, WWD and Seventeen. So, if you find yourself in NYC keep an eye and an ear out for the man as he is sure to get quite a bit of attention over the coming months.
