Like most kids feel attached to stray animals, Kevin Cyr seems to feel about abandoned vans, forgotten food-trucks, and general bombs of motor vehicles.
Brooklyn-based Cyr has been painting these beasts for years, creating in such detail every bit of graffiti lettering and every dent in every truck. Each little rust spot, scratch, scuff and dent – it’s all paid so much attention that these trucks have an almost hyper-realistic appearance.
Cyr’s collection of “truck portraits” are on show in an exhibition in New York right now. It’s called In Praise of Rust which is a great name and a lovely sentiment – especially in this throw-away society we’re living in.
At the Jonathan Levine Gallery, 529 West 20th Street, New York from 19th May to 16th June.
