Your city profile for this Scandinavian destination
Sweden’s capital, Stockholm, boasts incredible history, architecture, fashion, food, culture and design, so it’s easy to see why more and more travellers are exploring its Scandinavian shores each year – and if you’re one of them, we high five you!
A proper introduction to Stockholm must begin with a visit to the jaw-dropping City Hall, where you can marvel at the country’s leading example of national romanticism and check out Stockholm’s most famous silhouette. To look at, City Hall is simply mind-blowing and is famously comprised of eight million red bricks and 19 million gold mosaic tiles. In terms of functionality, it is the workplace of Sweden’s politicians and officials, the home of luxury restaurant Stadshuskällaren and the venue for the Nobel Prize Banquet! To get the most out of your visit we’d suggest joining one of the daily group tours, where you can learn all about the history of the building and have the chance to stand in some of the halls where world greats have partied, a #noregrets moment like no other.
If you’re interested in the street culture of Stockholm (and why wouldn’t you be?!) a trip to the trendy area of SoFo is essential. Set in the Södermalm district, SoFo is a popular bohemian-type spot that boasts a range of unusual and interesting fashion boutiques, restaurants, bars and clubs - you’ve come to the centre of chic here, so be sure to get involved with the shopping! Tjallamalla has a wide up-to-the-minute selection of clothes, shoes, jewelry and vintage pieces with a big focus on Swedish designers, and Grandpa is another great fashion boutique with frequent DJ’s and live music. If you can’t fit any more clothes into your pack then you better shuffle a few things around to make some space for other knickknacks. There are great design stores in the area including our fave Coctail – a purveyor of brightly coloured kitsch homewares. Whatever you’re in to, remember you might not be back, so shop up a storm with #noregrets when in Sofo!
It’s time to mix things up a bit now and check out the world-famous Vasa Warship – an impressive ship that unexpectedly sank on her maiden voyage in Stockholm 1628 and was salvaged in 1961. What was created as a machine of war is now a piece of art and each year thousands of visitors come to examine her beauty and relive the tortuous journey that 450 men embarked on when it set sail. Join the crowds in marveling at the Vasa’s 64 strong canon armaments and her magnificent weaponry display of accouterments found on board. If you can imagine for just a minute what it must have been like back in 1600’s as a crew member, you’ll remember this important landmark in Swedish forever.
After a full day in Stockholm you’ll feel like chilling out, and if you’re keen to do that quite literally, then the city’s world-famous Ice Bar is where you need to go. It’s a bar crafted entirely from ice – walls, ceilings, bar stools, glasses, we mean everything! So grab yourself a cold dink, share some of your travel stories with the mostly international crowd and soak up a unique #noregrets bar experience – your trip to Stockholm is complete.
