The Mexican food in California is just one of the many reasons that the state’s proximity to the South (and therefore its large Latin American population) makes it one of the best places in America.
Apart from the many street vendours and food trucks, there are a bunch of excellent, and reasonably priced, Mexican restaurants all over Los Angeles.
One of these places is Malo (and its baby sister Mas Malo in Downtown).
This cantina-style restaurant is lovely to look at, but still very laid-back. The wait staff is super-friendly and will help you out if you’re not sure how much food to order, or what you feel like munching on.
We suggest, though, that you get the grilled corn, pork belly blue corn taco, and the fried beef tacos. If you’re game (and you should be) there is also the ‘dirty rice’ which is a treat and a half – black beans, rice, Oaxacan cheese and heaps of lime juice. It might not sound much in words, but trust us.
Everything is super cheap too – especially the cocktails. We suggest the spicy cucumber margarita, which will set you back a whopping $7. Heaven.
Malo is at 515 7th Street, Downtown and 4326 West Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles.
