Housing key works by artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Louise Bourgeois, Pablo Picasso, Niki de Saint Phalle, Salvador Dalí, Carolee Schneemann, Henri Matisse and Robert Rauschenberg, Stockholm’s Moderna Museet is like the Vatican of the art world. With one of the world’s finest collections of art from 1900 to the present day, it is a must-see for every traveller and is sure to amaze, delight and inspire all who visit.
Having opened in 1958, the museum quickly gained a reputation as one of the world's most ground-breaking contemporary art venues and today continues to attract critical acclaim with its amazing architecture and astounding collection of 20th and 21st century art. The Moderna Museet collection comprises some 5,000 paintings, sculptures and installations, some 25,000 watercolours, drawings and prints, and some 100,000 photographs, as well as art videos and film, and the artist Einar Hylander’s Apartment on Narvavägen 29 in Stockholm.
Situated on Skeppsholmen, an island in central Stockholm, the Moderna Museet boasts its core collection of art as well as a range of changing exhibitions. At the moment you can check out ‘Sturtevant’ (incredible image-over-image art), ‘Explosion!’ (an experimental type of art that combines painting with performance), ‘Yoko Ono’ (artwork by yours truly) and its newest exhibition, ‘Pablo Picasso vs Marcel Duchamp’. As well as the exhibitions, the museum offers a great events calendar packed with performances, seminars, tours and concerts. The ‘Bucky Dome’ (a dome-like tent in the garden of the museum), is a popular venue for the events and currently plays hosts to yoga sessions and music and light concerts, amongst other workshops and activities – all definitely worth a looksee when visiting.
Once you’ve taken in the amazing artwork and have taken part in some of the additional activities on offer, a visit to the museum restaurant on the terrace is a must! Here you will see amazing views towards Östermalm and can enjoy a delicious a delicious salad, soup or pastry.
Moderna Museet is open Tuesday from 10am – 8pm and from Wednesday till Sunday from 10am – 6pm. Tickets cost 100 SEK (approx 12 euro) for adults or 80 SEK (approx 10 euro) for students. It is definitely worth checking out and will quite easily fill a morning, if not a full day!
