Everybody knows the clichés about Amsterdam: special cookies, bike riding and the Red Light District. The reality is that the Red Light district truly is incredible as one might think.
The area – called Rossebuurt (meaning red/pink) is full of sex shops, peep shows, strip clubs, museums and brothels and is quite beautifully (and aptly) lit up with warm crimson tones.
Chances are if you’re in Amsterdam and of legal age, you’ll want to check out Rossebuurt. Ain’t no shame! But it’s important to behave properly, just like at any tourist or cultural sight. Nobody wants to be remembered as “that Australian jerk” who didn’t realise, but behaved inappropriately.
So here are our hot (of course) tips for visiting Amsterdam’s Red Light District.
Don’t take photos of women in windows, wait until the room/window is empty.
Don’t laugh/disrespect the workers. Just remember they’re there for money, not just your amusement. They are humans too.
Look out for dodgy types: drug dealers and pick-pocketers and con-artists all hang out in this area because it’s rife with travellers. Keep your head on straight.
The Red Light District is located just near Dam Square.
