Japan-born, US-based artist Tato Ito’s Shinagawa Shinju exhibition at Hong Kong’s Above Second gallery until July 20th.
Ito’s artworks are pretty fantastic, and the amount of detail and effort that goes into each brushstroke is absolutely evident – even when just viewing the paintings online.
Ito is apparently influenced by the technique of Japanses rakugo storytellers (which is a verbal artform, focused on comedy) because his pieces convey comical and clever narratives.
We’re not very clued-in about rakugo, but we certainly love the stories that Ito’s artworks tell so meticulously and beautifully. His paintings are colourful and almost mathematically neat, with the perfect amount of oddity.
