Whether you love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day is here once again. The overpriced set dinner meals are out in force, there’s pink as far as the eye can see and people are complaining about there never being a day to celebrate being single (FYI haters singles day is celebrated on February 15th!).
We may be a tad sceptical, but if there’s one thing we KNOW we’re in love with, it’s travelling the world. And of course, from time to time people do fall in love on their travels, some even on Contiki trips! We can’t help but think the Universe has a little something to do with this, simply by putting such god damn beautiful and romantic destinations in our path. Whether you’re looking for love or just an age old romantic, here are our top 10 places to fall in love:
As the old black and white movie Casablanca taught us, “We’ll always have Paris”. Arguably the MOST romantic of all romantic destinations, people have been falling in love in (and with) Paris since the beginning of time and it’s not hard to see why. From river cruises down the Seine, to kissing at the top of the Eiffel Tower or sharing romantic looks in Parisian coffee shops, Paris thoroughly deserves its title as the City of Love. Add to that the French inclination for PDAs and the hot blooded sexiness of Parisian people, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for romance.

If turquoise glistening seas, fine powder white sands and turtle spotting weren’t romantic enough for you, the Whitsundays even have their very own heart shaped island (because why say it with flowers when you can say it with tropical coral instead?). Similarly, take your loved one to Whitehaven beach, one of the top 10 beaches in the world. Words can’t describe the beauty of this place and yes, you will fall in love with it, your partner, your mate, any random stranger you’re sharing the view with.

Unless you’re made of stone you can’t help but fall in love with the land of smiles. From its ancient temples and spiritual sites to its gorgeous sandy beaches, traditional fishing boats and off the beaten track jungle hiding places, Thailand is a country of mystery, outstanding natural beauty and of course, romance. Ever popular with young lovers, honeymooners and old timers alike, you’re 100% guaranteed to find your special place in Thailand.

Potentially a curve ball, but hear us out. Sandy beaches, romantic cities and tropical climates aren’t for everyone. Some of us prefer the hustle and bustle of city life, in all its taxi beeping, public transport hell, smoggy air glory. And where better than in the Big Apple, King of the hustle AND of the bustle. Strolling through Central Park in fall, catching the ferry to the Statue of Liberty or gazing up at the Rockefeller Christmas Tree are all massively romantic activities, plus you’re guaranteed to find a super romantic restaurant to end your day of love at every corner.
Fall in love in New York.
A strong contender against Paris for the most romantic city of all time, Rome boasts a heavy weight list of romantic inhabitants including Romeo and Juliet and Casanova. There’s literally no arguing with that. If you combine the city’s beauty, history, cuisine and the musicality of its language, there’s just no beating it. Take inspiration from Eat, Pray, Love – move to Rome, eat pizza, and begin your study in falling in love.

A glorious, rich, enchanting sunset is the elixir to any blossoming love story, and they don’t come much better than in Santorini. The quintessentially Greek white and blue domed churches look almost other worldly against the glow of the setting sun, and set off with a delicious plate of local sea food and the pitter patter of donkey’s feet, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in some kind of mystical Greek dream. People come to Santorini thinking they know what it means to be in love; they leave knowing how it feels to be in love.

Definitely one for the outdoorsy types amongst you, but where better to discover your romantic side than atop a mountain surrounded by thousands of years of Mayan culture and a few llamas to boot. Unsurprisingly, Machu Picchu has seen many a man (and woman) go down on bended knee to propose to their beloved, and we personally can’t think of a more incredible spot to pledge your love for the rest of your life. Too soppy? Maybe they all just got a case of altitude fever…
Fall in love in Machu Picchu.
When it comes to romantic destinations London probably isn’t most people’s first choice, but we’re here to prove you wrong! Think taking a frosty winter’s walk in the park surrounded by deer is a romantic activity? How about gazing at the city skyline from a 40th floor chic restaurant with champagne in hand? SO.ROMANCTIC. See! Richmond Park, the afore mentioned activity, and the Duck and Waffle, the latter mentioned activity, are just two of many date spots available for couples in London.
Fall in love in London.
Do you love wildlife, the ocean and all things David Attenborough? Then the Galapagos Islands are your go to romantic destination. Spend your days diving with sharks and seals or hanging out with the legendary giant tortoises, then kick back in the evening and get back to nature amongst your incredible surroundings. A romantic getaway for the more adventurous couple, but trust us, an ABSOLUTE must.
Fall in love in the Galapagos Islands.
No top 10 love list would be complete without mentioning the obscenely romantic floating city of Venice. If floating along canals whilst being serenaded by a hunky gondolier playing an accordion doesn’t make you melt, then chances are you’re destined for a life alone. Sorry about that.
Fall in love in Venice.
