Last week I booked my first overseas holiday, and for a portion of the time I will be doing a Contiki! I’m really excited, but also extremely nervous as I’ve paid for pre and post tour accomodation. I’ll be staying in the hotel’s that Contiki go through, which means I’ll be sharing a room with another Contiki-goer.

I am so sooo nervous about this as this person is going to be a complete stranger! Has anybody ever experienced this before that can ease my worry? Before the tour I’m arriving 2 days early, and for those 2 days I have nothing planned. No tours or anything! It worries me that I will be confined to my hotel room for 2 days because I won’t know how to get around or where to go or anything. And even though I am a super friendly person, I keep thinking about the possibility of not getting along with my room mate and not having anybody to trust or hang out with before the tour!!
Someone please help!! Smiler

Btw I’m doing the Western Highlights tour starting in LA and finishing in Vegas in April next year. If anyone is doing that tour let me know.. it would be awesome to get to know you before I get there!!

I had a question, in the contiki book, it says your suitcase can have a maximum dimension of 29″×20″×10″ (HxWxL)= 59" and a max weight of 20kg i was wondering how many people bring a suitcase that big? i have a 29" upright suitcase and for my tour, European Escapade, it’s 27 days long and i think the suitcase is enough if anything maybe too small (i pack heavy) do travellers on tour 20 days or longer bring the max allowed or usually pack small and compact??
i don’t want to look like the only fool lugging around a huge suitcase

I’m doing the European Encounter in June and was wondering what internet access will be like on that trip? Wireless is preferred. I just found out that I will be needing to check in with work every couple of days to montior my portfolio, so I guess my laptop will be coming to Europe with me. Any pointers for taking a laptop over there, besides armed guards? So much for the whole escaping work thing lol.

Contiki recently cancelled the Sept 29 Eastern Discovery tour.

As a result I have lost over $500 on train and plane tickets.  Yes I am out of pocket because CONTIKI cancelled a tour.  If I get sick and cancel a tour I lose ALL my money.  But if CONTIKI dont make enough PROFIT on a tour they cancel it at YOUR expense.

I would warn everyone not to pay any money for a tour (or travel to it) until Contiki confirms that a tour will go ahead.

I would also like to point out that the Contiki sales person told me to pay my money up front because “there are less than 5 places left on the tour”.

YET MONTH LATER THEY CANCEL IT….

SHAME ON YOU CONTIKI.

Does the maximon luggage weight (20kg) include the daily personal bag or just the suitcase? Does ALL my stuff have to be under 20kg?

And, on a more stupid note, how do you weight your luggage at home? How can I know I’m under the limit, before I get to the airport??

It seems that most travelers are under 25. I would like to know if anyone between 26-35 has done one of these tours or is planning on doing one of these tours. I am 28 and would like to take a tour of Europe. Thanks.

Just wondering if anyone knows where would be the best to spend the 4th in LA? We arrive on the 3rd and have planned it so that we can join in the festivities lol.

I was thinking maybe Venice beach or Disneyland? Does anyone have experiences or suggestions?

Thanks (I’m doing the Wild Western on the 6th July)

Just wondering do TM’s know in advance what tours they will be going on or do they only find out a few days before it starts?

Hi Hi Hi,

My sister and I are doing the Grand Adventurer with the reverse start in Christchurch in July.

The tour finishes up in Auckland, but our flights leave from Christchurch a few days later.

Does anybody know the best way to get from Auckland to Christchurch? Is it easiest to fly or is there a train or bus you can take?

Any ideas are appreciated!

Hi – I’m on a tour starting at the Kyoto Grand and I’ve booked to stay there before the tour on a sharing room basis.
Can anyone tell me how they match you up as it’s before the tour begins? It will be a bit weird if we just get a room key and go to a room where someone is already sleeping or something!
Any info on this would be appreciated Big Grin

So i’ve been wondering, does anyone know of a great opera house in Rome or Italy.? I’m thinking of checking one out. And if so, can I get away from the tour to do this. I’ve heard from several posts, to SKIP the Rome tour by all means necessary. I think seeing a show would be awesome!

This Credit Card seems to be the best way to use money in Europe.

I can’t belive everyone hasn’t got one.

With the mentions of early start times and late nights out, it sounds like most days are pretty long. Is there ever time to just get away for a good head-clearing/pretty scenery run? I’m fine getting up extra early to go run, but the wake-up thread mentioned 7AM departures. Just trying to decide if I need to pack/how much running gear.

How did most people carry their money around in Europe? I hear ATM cards are the way to go vs. travelers checks these days. Also, did you get some sort of money belt to hide your passport and cash so pickpockets can’t get to it?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hey all,

Just a quick question (and forgive my ignorance) but are we allowed to bring bottles of duty free alcohol with us on the tour?

I have found on previous (non-Contiki) trips that this is a cheaper option for quiet nights in (simply need to buy coke, lemonade, whatever).

Not sure if Contiki has any rules on this. Couldn’t seem to find anything on the website.

Thanks,
Sam
