Almost all other Contiki tours advise using a suitcase as luggage. Would it be better to use a backpack/duffel bag as primary luggage for this type of tour instead?

hey everyone im going to europe for 5months starting in may 2011 and i was wondering if you would recommend a blanket or sleeping bag.
im staying in hotels until june and then i start my tours which is ‘concept’ and they say bring a sleeping bag.
its right in the middle of summer and could i get by with just a blanket or is it to cold?
if you’ve been before what did you use?

Hello, I just booked my Contiki trip (European Impressions, May 08) last week with my travel agent, but he suggested I look for air on my own. I looked last week, and the prices (out of Chicago) were around $650, but the next day, they were up around $800. In everyone else’s experience, how early did you book your flight? And if anyone else has flown to Europe from Chicago (we’re going in to London and out of Paris), do these seem like decent prices? I don’t mind waiting a while to book, but have no experience and not sure if sooner is better. Thanks!

I’m doing the Great Britain Summer tour and I’m not sure whether I should pick the date that is in Edinburgh for the Military Tattoo or not. I’m sure the atmposphere would be great during the military tattoo but at the same time I’m worried that Edinburgh will be really busy with tourists and stuff and it might be nicer to see the city when there’s nothing happening. Any opinions?

I’ll be travelling from London to Athens from 30th May to the 19th June.
this is at the same time the Euro Cup will be being played..
Will there be opportunities to watch the games on the tour?
Are there televisions in the cabins
Or will there be local pubs etc etc showing the games??

hey guys,
dunno if anyone can help, have had a look around the forums and cancelled tours and haven’t seen anything to answer my questions so hopefully someone can help me out!
basically am looking at doing european discovery on the 29th of december.
my main concern is that it is not a preferred departure so I was wondering what the likelyhood of a tour around that time if it would be cancelled? is the end of december a busy time?can anyone give any recommendations on going around that time?
my other question is new years. going to be pretty awesome being in europe for new years! has anyone been on contiki over new years- what was it like etc
any advice would be greatly appreciated!
thanks!

Hello all,
I am off on the Northern Escape (leaving from Chicago June 1st)
Does anyone have any ideas on the cost of other activities not included on the optional excursions list?
I know when I did Europe with Contiki there where things we forked out for on top of usual stuff.
I’m not cheap but coming to the end of a long trip with limited funds, and need to budget!
Was looking at round $50US per day
Any help would be great!

Hey,
Decided to actually measure my suitcase today – it’s just slightly over all the Contiki measurements: 1cm over in width and depth and 3.5cm over in length. How strict are they on enforcing the size (it’ll be max 12kg – most stuff is being left @ Aunts place in UK) – i know it has something to do with EU laws.
Moderators please help – I really don’t want to buy a new suit case, but don’t want to be repacking @ 6:45 am

Hi there
My daughter left for the USA on January 18th this year and has spent the last 3 days in Los Angeles. She is doing the Wild West Tour beginning on Wednesday 23rd which she is looking forward to.
But we back here in Australia have been keeping in contact with her in LA and from what she has been telling us, her time so far has been a complete nightmare.
She was told by her travel agent here that the hotels she would be staying in at LA were quite good, but has since found out by someone who lives in LA that the area where she is staying is a very rough and dangerous area.
Tomorrow she gets a shuttle bus from the airport to Best Western Stovall’s Inn to await the beginning of her Contiki tour.
I just hope that from here on in, things start going well for her. Because I don’t know if I can take much more hearing my daughter crying her eyes out and wanting to come back home. It’s breaking my heart!
Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure that the USA is a great place to holiday, and I’d love to go there myself one day, but my daughter has just had one bad thing after another go wrong.
I’ll give an example..
Last Saturday 19th, my daughter decided to go to Target by taxi to check it out since she used to work in Target here in Australia. So off she went by taxi, did her shopping but when it came time to go back to her hotel she came up against a big obstacle. No taxi driver would come to pick her up when she hailed one or rang for one. She ended up going up to a police officer and asking for help. He then called a taxi and one eventually came.
Anyway, we’ve been drumming it into her that things will improve and when she starts her Contiki tour she will make some friends and when she gets back to LA, she might be able to catch up with some of them and spend time together. That way she won’t be alone like she is now.
Sorry for coming across as an aussie whinger, but since I am so far away, and feel so helpless in that I wish I could do more for my daughter, I thought this might be a good opportunity to ask for some tips or advice I might pass on to my daughter that may be of benefit.
So, if anyone out there has some constructive advice for me, it will be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Neil

Have anyone used the Dot2Dot transportation (http://www.dot2.com) from Gatwick to the Royal National Hotel. It seems to be about the same price than taking the trains and they take you directly to your hotel. I will be in the Dec. 28th discovery tour with my wife and I’m looking for the best way to go from Gatwick to the hotel and viceversa.
Angel
