Travel Update: Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy (Category One) reached the East Coast of the United States on Monday evening (local time). Information regarding tours currently in the areas affected by the hurricane are as follows:

The New York Uncovered (starting New York City 30-Oct-2012) has been cancelled due to safety concerns. Passengers on this tour are advised to contact the travel agent or local Contiki reservations office on the numbers below for further details. Any passengers currently en route that arrive at the Sheraton Brooklyn will be able to use their accommodation, and Contiki staff are on site to assist.

The Best of USA (departed Los Angeles 18-Oct-2012) arrived safely at their hotel in New York on Saturday 27-Oct-2012.

The Grand Southern (departed Los Angeles 18-Oct-2012) departed Washington DC and arrived safely at the hotel in New York City.

The Grand Southern (departing New York City 02-Nov-2012) and the Eastern Discovery (departing New York City 02-Nov-2012) at this stage will operate as planned. Any passengers unable to fly into New York City may instead fly into Washington DC in order to join up with their tour. Passengers on these tours are advised to contact the travel agent or local Contiki reservations office on the numbers below for further details.

Transport Information



Both JFK & Newark partially opened at 7am local time, but La Guardia remains closed.
Bridges into Manhattan - All bridges into Manhattan are now open.

New York City Transit

Buses run on regular routes on Wednesday, but expect delays, detours and crowding. Fares waived on Wednesday.
Subways Restoration likely to come in stages; no certain date for full service.
Taxis are allowed to pick up multiple passengers at multiple points.
Livery cars can be hailed.
Amtrak trains - Some Northeast Regional service will return Wednesday.


Airline flight activity has increased today at Reagan National and Dulles International Airports. Some flights remain canceled as airlines work to restore their schedules following the passage of Hurricane Sandy.
All airport services at Reagan National and Dulles International are fully operational. All food, beverage and retail shops are open.
Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) is open.
The Washington airports weathered Hurricane Sandy without damage or flooding.
