Tijuana Visits Suspended
5:53pm PDT, April 30, 2008
Dear Contiki Clients,
We would like to advise you of a change in the itinerary to your tour. Per the brochure, Day 1 of your tour states that we will visit Tijuana, Mexico in the afternoon. Unfortunately, we will not travel into Tijuana due to recent events that could jeopardize ones safety while visiting Tijuana.
In recent months, there have been violent exchanges between criminal organizations struggling for control of the narcotics trade in border cities. While the targets of such attacks are members of drug trafficking organizations, foreign visitors have been among the victims.
Our priority is your safety first and foremost. As a tour operator, we have a responsibility to ensure that you and our staff are safe at all times on tour. Due to the above, we are suspending our trip into Tijuana. We will spend the day in San Diego and you can enjoy the afternoon in a wonderful city by taking advantage of great dining, sightseeing and shopping. Your tour manager will explain in detail what options are available to you in San Diego.
Should you still have a desire to visit Tijuana on your second day in San Diego or after your tour ends, we can advise you on how to make your own way to and from the city. However, we do not recommend that you visit the city. The US State Department has issued travel warnings against traveling to border cities until the situation becomes safe for tourists.
We hope you understand our decision to exercise our right to vary itineraries (see our booking conditions section 4.3) and suspend visits to Tijuana, but please let us reiterate that your safety is our number one concern. We thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Should you have any questions, please feel free to address them with your tour manager. We hope your visit to the USA and your tour is a memorable experience.
