Phone use in the USA

Hi Guys, I am hoping that someone will be able to help me. I am going to the states in Jan and I have a Iphone, I dont want to make phone calls or text messages to people in Aus I would rather be able to use my facebook or emails for them. However I would like to be able to possibly make calls to other numbers in the states. I do not want to get Roaming because I do not wish to get ripped off. If someone has some advise I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks Paula
