23 Days of travelling solo literally saved my life

This article was created for The Travel Project by Kelli Barta a 26-year old free-spirit who loves to travel and document her travels on her YouTube Channel.

I fell into a dark place in my life. I was severely depressed with anxiety that caused me to not even leave the house. I became suicidal and attempted a couple times with no obvious success. I knew that I could not live my life that way anymore and I was tired of waking up on a daily basis, so angry that I did wake up, after nights of praying that I wouldn't.

I took myself out of my comfort zone and did a solo road trip, which was one of the hardest but most rewarding things I've ever done.

It put me out there, vulnerable to the world. While I did have my weak moments, I overall became such a stronger person after that trip. I was put in situations where I had to depend on myself and myself only. I learned so much about myself in those 23 days.

Traveling has changed my life and for that reason, I am so eternally grateful for the experiences I have been lucky enough to have.

Since I quit my job last year and followed my burning desire to travel, I have been to Iceland, Hawaii, and a solo road trip from California, up to Washington, over to Idaho and down to Arizona.

Traveling has been a life-saver for me. Seeing the world and knowing that there is so much more out there that I want to explore and see, keeps me motivated and inspired to travel as much as I can.

I know what its like to not know if you’re going to see the light of day tomorrow. And I don’t wish that upon anybody. And that is why I have started a YouTube channel. I have put up a couple videos that I have edited using Final Cut Pro, of my travels. I want to start getting personal on my channel and opening up about my experiences and how travel has saved my life. I want to inspire people and show people going through what I went through, that it will get better and all the pain they’re going through right now, will be worth it in the end.

Life is so beautiful, and I will never take it for granted again.
