I could rave on about the most beautiful places to visit in Sri Lanka for days as this country just has so much to offer. It’s a very special place that will leave you utterly inspired. The train from Ella to Kandy
Quite possibly the most beautiful train ride in the world. Take the journey from Ella to Kandy or vice versa to be treated with never ending landscapes of tea plantations. The journey takes about 6 hours in total, but time sure does fly when you are having fun. Grab some fresh chai tea, a bag of Masala Vadai’s (curried lentil fritters) from the locals and dangle your legs outside of the train carriage. Just be ready to pull them up when you come across tunnels and overgrown foliage!
Udawalawe National Park
One of the must-do things in Sri Lanka is to go on an Elephant Safari – and the best place to do one is Udawalawe National Park. We got up close to around 30 Asian elephants, water buffalos, crocodiles and dozens of different reptile and bird species. I thought that nothing could top the day but with an afternoon to ourselves we decided to get a tuk-tuk and asked the driver to take us to the best sunset spot.
We bypassed all of the crowds at the main sunset viewing point and went further along the road. Our driver pulled over on the side of the road and told us to walk back 300m, and there it was; a beautiful elephant standing at the fence line with the sun setting directly behind. It was absolutely amazing.
Pidurangala Rock
Climb up Sigiriya’s neighbour Pidurangala Rock to get this incredible view overlooking the impressive citadel. The walk is best to do early morning, so set your alarm for 5am and get yourself up the top to watch the day begin. It’s a steady 30-minute hike to get to the top of the rock with only the last 5 minutes being a bit of a scramble. It is suggested that you get a tuk tuk driver that will also guide you up the rock, as it is very possible to get lost when you are in the dark. Make sure you bring a scarf or cover up your shoulders as you have to pass through a temple to start the walk.
Little Adam’s Peak
Set your alarm for 5am and hike up to the top of Little Adam’s Peak for sunrise. At the half way point, the path splits into two – a quicker route up the stairs, or a winding, over grown path that takes a little bit longer. Both will get you to the top of the peak, it’s just up to you on what you feel like doing. The hike isn’t too difficult, nor does it take a long time (30 minutes up) and you’ll be treated with the most stunning view overlooking tea plantations.

Unawatuna Beach
Well, if it isn’t the insta-famous swing. Sadly enough the rope had been cut when I went to visit but it was still absolutely breathtaking. Maybe you can try your luck and the rope will be fixed when you go. The beach is called Unawatuna Beach and is situated between Mirissa and Galle on the South Coast of Sri Lanka. I stayed in Mirissa and asked my tuk tuk driver to stop on the way back from Galle.
