Calling all conscious sartorialists and fast fashion haters! Charity powerhouse Oxfam is teaming up with pre-owned fashion store, Vestaire Collection and #ThisMuchIKnow to launch a secret second hand clothing sale. Okay, so maybe the secret’s out…
By now we all know how harmful the fashion industry can be, with nearly 11 million items of clothing ending up in landfill every week. Throwaway fashion puts tonnes of pressure on our planet and its people, and above all it’s completely unsustainable. This is your opportunity to do something about it.
The celebrity sale will be open on Thursday 19 September 2019 for 24 hours only. And when we say celebrities, we mean amazing names in fashion, music and beyond – including the likes of Paloma Faith, Rachel Weisz, ex-Vogue’s Alexandra Shulman, designers Henry Holland and Bella Freud, model Lily Cole, Made in Chelsea’s Georgia Toffolo and Pixie Geldof. The best news? All the proceeds will go to Oxfam, who have now become leaders in the sustainable fashion world.
Their latest research revealed just how harmful and polluting the UK’s consumption of new clothes really is. In fact, in one month alone, the carbon footprint of new clothes was bigger than flying a plane around the world 900 time!
Want to get involved beyond the secret sale? Oxfam have also launched the #SecondHandSeptember initiative, helping to lead more of us into the ways of sustainable fashion. Take the Second Hand September Pledge and pledge to say no to new clothes for 30 days. It’s an easy way for us to all do our bit, helping to drastically reduce our carbon emissions. Share your second hand gems on Instagram tagging #SecondHandSeptember and you’ll also help to spread the word.
