I would advise NOT to go on this particular Contiki tour. As a first time traveller it was a decent way to see a lot of things in a short amount of time. However, European Discovery spends way too much time on the bus versus how much time you spend in the country. Perhaps Contiki should specify travel times on their website so people have an idea.
They shove free time ad ons down your throat and are not honest about how much enjoyment you will get out of each one. Just that each one is "amazing", which is a lie to get more money out of us.
If you do decide to go on this trip, I would recommend the following add on's: Amsterdam canal cruise , Mike's Bike tour, White water rafting, Gondola ride (just something you have to do in Venice), Vatican Tour (another thing you have to do in Rome - was boring though), and the Swiss mountain.
I hated hearing how much cheaper this trip was for people on my tour, they got a deal due to lack of sales, i found it unfair as most people paid over 1k less than what my friend I did for the exact same experience... so why is there a reward for booking late, but not for being early and organised?
I can't complain about the accommodation, it was all great, apart from St Goar, I had hair all over my bed before I'd even sat down. Otherwise, the accommodation was nice and clean!
Our tour guide was nice, but she only spoke to who she wanted to speak to and came across as a fake "wanna-be party girl". For some reason she flat out refused to let us play any music we wanted to, or even make suggestions, she would only play music SHE liked, which was acoustic covers that put everyone to sleep within seconds. We had multiple people ask multiple times to change the music and she wouldn’t let us. Considering this was OUR tour which WE paid for, I found this selfish, and the boring music made the long hours on the bus all the more excruciating.
Overall, the food that was provided for us was decent and the accommodation was great, but its not worth the money (unless you get a cheap deal like only some people are lucky enough to). If you are looking for a short tour, pick a tour that does less countries because you will have more time there and you won’t feel like you’re always on a bus and rushing around from country to country.
