Truly amazing

I booked this trip last minute as a 'friend' had dropped out on me and I needed a trip that I could go on, on my own. I can honestly say that it was the best decision that I have ever made because I had an absolutely amazing time! There were 15 of us altogether split over 2 boats, and I managed to have a double bed to myself all week as my roommate was more comfortable sleeping on deck due to the heat. The boats were really nice, and actually quite comfortable. I've certainly slept in a lot worse. A typical day would be waking up at around 7 or 8am (because the sun is just too bright and hot that it's impossible to sleep in), set sail around 9.30am for about an hour or two then we stop for a swim and breakfast, set sail again for another few hours then stop for more swimming and lunch, set sail again and it'd be another couple of hours to port where we'd dock, go for a walk around, have dinner and then hang out. The skippers were brilliant and the breakfasts on board are amazing; literally the best jam I've ever tasted. I'd strongly recommend that you have the skipper cook lunch and then everyone just contributes towards it. The most we spent is 3 euro each and we had some amazing authentic Greek meals. I was little worried that I would handicap the meals because I'm lactose intolerant but this just wasn't the case. If you let the skippers know, they're more than accomodating. Whenever we'd stop for a swim, our skipper would tell a little about where we were and the history behind it which was great. Also, when we docked in port, the skippers would recommend stuff for us to do. We went bike riding, climbed 999 steps to a fort, went shopping, and best all watched the most amazing sunsets every night because the skippers would tell us the best vanatge points. One particular day we couldn't pull into the port on the itinerary due to the wind so we went to a nearby port and the skippers paid for a water taxi for us so that we could still see everything on the other island. They didn't have to do it but they did, which just shows how nice they are. I really could go on all day about how great this trip was. It was my first time away from home on my own and my first Contiki. It was that good that within a week, I had booked myself another one. You'd be really missing out if you gave this one a miss! Just a couple of sidenotes: 1) I'd give yourself a couple of days either before or after the trip so that you can get out and about in Athens because the tour doesn't encompass any of that; 2 days should be more than enough. 2) Your skipper is essentially your tour manager. You'll meet someone at the hotel who will take you to the port but they don't come with you on the trip. You're essentially left to your own devices and there's no 'organised activities' which is good because it means that you all bond as a group.

This trip deserves 5 stars

When I booked this trip, I was looking for two things: a relaxing holiday in the sun and sailing. The Greek Sailing trip delivered just that. What I didn't know was... well... everything else. On the morning of the trip, I knew exactly three things. 1. The ports that we would stop at, 2. where to go for the meetup and 3. the day that we would get back. Even with the message board, those of us on there really had zero idea what to expect. How many people? What are the sleeping arrangements? What are the optionals? It was a complete mystery. That said, it couldn't have been better. I've done Contiki before Winter European Escapade and this was so different. There were only 8 (plus the one skipper) of us sharing a 5 cabin sailboat (roughly 50'). Two of the rooms have (very small) bunkbeds and the other 3 have a queen sized bed. I, however, made the wise decision of sleeping on the deck every night as it's just that much nicer to sleep under the stars. Everyday, we woke up around 8, as the sun made it very hard to sleep in, where we went swimming, then had breakfast, sailed (or used the engine if the wind was poor) for a few hours, swam again, had lunch, sailed to port, walked around, had dinner, then hung out. This is nothing like my other contiki tour of clubbing and drinking every night. We went out once and it was a lot of fun, but our tight knit group hung around with a few beers and chatted most nights. It was very relaxing and a very Greek experience. Now onto selling the idea of this trip for you. When I say that we had swim stops, that encompasses every aspect of swimming that you can imagine. We were rock climbing in small caves, jumping off 40' cliffs, diving to the bottom of the med, swimming with schools of fishes, playing on the beach, relaxing on a paddleboard and simply just swimming. Every stop was uniquely different and every stop had absolutely stunning views. While we did spend a lot of time commuting from port to port (sometimes roughly 4 hours), the sun was amazing and it was very relaxing just lying on the front of the boat. I tried to read a book, but I couldn't bear looking at text when the views were so amazing (we even saw dolphins). The breakfasts were authentic (best Greek yoghurt I've ever had) and the lunches were delicious. Our skipper was a great cook and knew some amazing recipes. Meals were in no way handicapped by having a vegetarian on board (the warm summers usually steer Greek cuisine away from meat). We each got to try our hand at sailing the boat and picked up some amazing speed. It was such a good experience. While this trip does not have any optional experiences, each port is filled with unique things to do. We did some sightseeing, went to an art gallery, climbed 1000 steps to a fortress, rode donkeys, rode bicycles, went shopping and - most importantly - watched the sunset nearly every night. That was definitely a highlight for me. We went out for dinner every night, but there is the option of cooking dinner as well. The places recommended by our skipper were excellent. He never led us astray. Meals were cheap and delicious and the fish and vegetables were always amazingly fresh! Every night was truly unique I really can't say enough about how great this trip was. It was a truly authentic Greek experience and I felt like I had really soaked up the culture and Greek lifestyle, but didn't feel like a tourist at all. I got to relax in the sun and swim in the Med. I really think you'll enjoy this trip. My one piece of advice is to leave yourself a day or two for Athens as well, as the trip doesn't truly include athens. Ours started at 2:30pm on the first say and ended at 9:30am on the 8th day. So make sure you get some time to see Athens (and maybe book a trip from the harbour out to a few other ports as well!)

The BEST 8 days EVER!!

I actually went last year and promised the guys I'd leave a review. I've completely forgtton until I've come back here to book my next holiday. I've seen the dude who's left a rather indepth review; it's pretty acurate so I'll try keep mine short and sweet :) Don't think about it, just go ahead and book it!! This trip was soooooo incredible; the people, the lifestyle, the destinations...ARGHHHH, thinking about it makes me want to go back so much!! I can't call them staff becuase they've really become my friends but the guys at Contiki on the boat were really awesome. Their company really made the trip for me. What I really loved was the freedom to really feed my curiosity. I would litrally say "Hey guys, can we head over to that little island over there?" and they would reply with just simply sailing over. It wasn't on the trip, just some random island we were sailing past that was a nature reserve. We set anchor, and spent a couple hours there. AMAZING!!! The food was incredible, the people even more so, and the places we visited were breathtaking. From watching a thunderstorm in the distance after an incredible plate of food to raising some undies that I stole as a flag to climbing up a castle to swimming with schools of fish to chilling at a bar with a glass of bourbon; there's tons to do to completely unwind. I forgot to mention the donkeys..oh, and the dolphins..... So a huge thanks to my skipper Yiorgos and the guy who made it all happen Petros for making it a week I'll never forget. And all you lovely gals who were with me as well, you know who you are ;) Greece, I love you. P.S, the toilet paper thing takes a little getting used to but it's not that bad. If you have no idea what I mean, go forth and find out brave adventurer!! P.S.S, the picture I've included is one I actually took by the way, just saying....

It was like a dream!

Well it was about 12-15 of us split up into two boats that sailed together like a little fleet of awesomeness. Though they were not HUGE boats, they were a nice size and made the whole experience more personal and special. As we sailed, we could sit in the back with our feet in the sea if we wanted or we could tan on the front of the boat. The skippers were awesome and very helpful. The airline even lost my luggage and somehow the skipper worked it out with a hotel in athens who was working it out with the airline and i was able to get my luggage by day two, phew! The food was amazing and very authentic and of course not much in this world can beat the views we had while sailing as well as on the islands. We stopped quite a bit in very pretty areas to swim and have our meals before we would dock at the island of the day. We would all then explore the quaint little towns and every night, everyone from the two boats would hang out and it felt like a little contiki family. Though the islands weren't the typical tourist destination, they were smaller so everything felt more authentic and natural from the food, to the locals, etc. I definitely had some very interesting experiences on this trip with very interesting and fun people and I will always treasure these memories with a big smile on my face!

My Contiki was: Fantastic-Dream-Like-Can I go back now?
