A LOCAL'S NEIGHBOURHOOD

–  guide to

GOLDEN HILL, SAN DIEGO

Artistic, young, low-key, trendy - all words you could use to describe lush and beautiful Golden Hill. Situated just south of the green expanse of Balboa Park and offering prime Pacific sunset opportunities, Golden Hill is the cherry atop San Diego's already fervently cool ice cream sundae.

Hilary Kearney
Beekeeper & founder of Girl Next Door Honey

Part environmentalist, part community activist, part creative and part beekeeping genius - is there anything Hilary Kearney can't do? Her guide to Golden Hill and beyond pays a special homage to the great outdoors, one of her greatest obsessions in life (alongside her bees).

INFLUX CAFE

"This place is just at the end of my street and there are some really pretty houses and architechure around here that you can stroll past on the way. "

1948 BROADWAY

Of the three Influx's in San Diego, the Golden Hill branch is (In Hilary's opinion) the best.

All polished floors, high ceilings that flood the room with Californian sunshine, basic but contemporary furniture, and really good coffee, this place is a regular for the work and uni crowds alike.

What to order? The bagels are their speciality, and 'the traditional' is pretty hard to resist.

1935 (OLD) CACTUS GARDEN, BALBOA PARK

"I love taking visitors here. I try to go for a hike but end up spending hours geeking out over the flowers and trying to get pictures of bees! As an artist I also really enjoy the shapes and patterns of all the different cacti."

2144 PAN AMERICAN ROAD W.

Obsessed with cacti, succulents and all things green? Then this place is basically your Utopia (and your Pinterest board of dreams).

Completely free and pretty much hidden from the outside world, this prickly paradise boasts cacti of every shape, size, type and formation, with native plants from Africa and Australia amongst them.

Swing by during your stroll of Balboa Park, but be prepared to lose hours here as you snap succulents to your hearts content.

MARISCOS GERMAN (MEXICAN FOOD TRUCK)

"Being a San Diegan I'm really snobby about my Mexican food. I grew up going camping in Baja, Mexico, and this is the closest I've found to real Baja style tacos."

FEDERAL BLVD AND 47TH ST

Don't let the dodgy car park location put you off - the tacos here are the absolute real deal.

Whilst this truck may be not much to look at, it's an absolute locals favourite with a huge reputation for serving arguably the best Mexican food in town - which is a huge claim in a place like San Diego.

What to order? It has to be the fish tacos washed down with a Clamato, the Mexican version of a Bloody Mary.

HIVE TOUR AT SUZIE'S FARM

"Coming out here and hanging out with the bees is one of my favourite ways to spend my time."

2570 SUNSET AVENUE

Just 13 miles south of downtown San Diego, you'll find Suzie's Farm, a 70-acre organic working farm that grows over 100 varieties of seasonal veggies, herbs, flowers and fruits, year round.

Pretty as a picture, Suzie's Farm is also where Hilary homes her bees, offering group hive tours once a month. What does this entail? Well, after suiting up in your bee suit, Hilary will lead you to the heart of the beehive, where thousands of busy buzzing bees are working hard to produce delicious honey.

BUT don't 'bee' confused; Hilary's tour isn't about learning to 'bee' a beekeeper, it is focused more on bee welfare, the various uses for honey, and how you can help these little unsung heros out in your own backyard. Could we 'bee' any more in love with this project?

SPEED BOAT ADVENTURE

1450 HARBOR ISLAND DRIVE

By now the lure of the Pacific will probably be pretty intense, and we have just the thing...

Fast, fun, and just a little bit fancy, who doesn't love cruising on the ocean and riding white water on a speed boat? Run by possibly the most quintessentially Californian dudes you'll ever meet, hop on board at the marina and as you cruise out, eye up the millionaires yachts for when you make your fortune.

Once out in the bay, it's throttle up as you do a big old loop to the Coronado Bridge and back. On route, you'll pass huge navy ships that will make you feel teeny tiny, and the absolute highlight of the trip - you'll get up close to the docks where San Diego's most beloved residents hang out. Who are they? Sea lions!

This is a ME Time Optional on Contiki trips in San Diego.
