TRAVEL IN NORTHERN TERRITORY

Despite having almost double the land size of both Thailand and France, the population of the Northern Territory is a sparse 244,000, making it one of the most lowly populated areas in Australia. So what can be found here if not an abundance of people? Spectacular earth formations, an abundance of wildlife both ferocious and friendly, and many of the people belonging to the oldest cultural civilization on the planet. And that’s just the start of it. Though ‘the NT’ is not the most common destination for international travellers to Australia, it may very well be the most rewarding. A journey here may start in the territory’s capital of Darwin, where the call of the day could be jumping in a crocodile cage, visiting a military museum and devouring a ‘chicken parma’ at a Surf Life Saving Club. Next you could sojourn south in the direction of Katherine, swimming in the gorges of Kakadu National Park and sleeping in a swag under the stars en route to the city. Taking the iconic Ghan railway line, you should then be on to Alice Springs, home to an iconic Beanie Festival and camel cup, not to mention plenty of indigenous culture. Not least of all Alice is the gateway to Uluru, the mysterious landmass also known as Ayers Rock that protrudes some 850 metres above the dusty desert. Scattered throughout this Australian territory you’ll find natural marvels and jovial characters aplenty; the spirit of the country’s red centre and desert territory can scarcely be summed up in words.
