INTRODUCTION TO POMPEII

One of the most fascinating places in all of Italy, get psyched to lap up Pompeii. Even though this ancient city was destroyed in the Pompeii eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., its culture and heritage lives on through its many ruins and museums that have been established to preserve its memory.

With so many things to do in Pompeii, kick off your adventure with a visit to the Antiquarium. This place will give you a crash-course into the history of Pompeii and the explosion that ended the city. You’ll also be able to get up-close-and-personal with many of the city’s artefacts, which are stored there for safe keeping. Marvel at the digital recreations of the city, before you get down and dirty with the ruins.

To get a good sense of what life was once like for the locals, visit the ancient Forum, where you’ll see ruins of the Temple of Apollo, which was Pompeii’s most important religious site, before wondering over to the Terme Stabine, where locals would take their baths. Get a taste of that silver spoon life at the House of the Faun, a luxurious aristocratic home.

Located just on the other side of Mount Vesuvius, you’ll find Naples, the capital city of the region of Campania. If you stay in Naples, not only will you have easy access to ancient Pompeii and nearby Herculaneum, but you’ll get to live it up with modern Italians in this lively city. While Naples still dishes out loads of information on Pompeii at its National Archaeological Museum, you can also check out places like Museo Cappella Sansevero and the Certosa di San Martino.

Eat and drink like a local at one of the city’s many eateries. Make sure you get the real Neapolitan pizza experience at Corso 283. Do as the locals do and only order margherita or marinara pizzas.

With so much history and culture to soak up, dive face-first into incredible Pompeii, Italy.
