The currency is the Euro (EUR). Whichever way you wanna pay for things on your trip, whether it’s by debit, prepaid travel card or cash, it’s a good idea to check the exchange rate before you travel to get yourself a good deal.

Spring through to mid summer (March - June) are usually considered the best times to visit Portugal. You’ll enjoy the best weather during these months, plus there’s a lot more going on when the sun’s out. But it’s one of those places that’s great any time of year. It depends what time of year you’re travelling, but assuming you’re heading there during the warmer seasons, you’ll want to bring lightweight, breathable clothes, sunglasses and a sturdy backpack for sure.

Portugal has excellent ATM access and you can use most major credit and debit cards in shops and to withdraw cash. If we’re heading somewhere rural where cash is preferred, we’ll make sure you’re sorted before we head off.

There isn’t a big tipping culture in Portugal, although in some more touristy places it tends to be encouraged. Wherever you are though, we’re sure that any cash tip will be greatly appreciated by the service staff. 

Tap water in Portugal meets EU safety standards for drinking, so you can be sure that wherever you are you’ll be able to drink from the tap. Bottled water is also readily available if that’s your preference.
