Impact Report 2024

In 2020, we decided it was time to save the travel industry from itself.

So we set ourselves 11 (ambitious) sustainability targets, on our journey to Net Zero.

Every year we hold ourselves accountable with our annual Impact Report. So how did we measure up in ‘24?

Boarding A Contiki Coach

GOAL 1: Reach net zero GHG emissions by 2050 from a 2019 baseline year: ongoing

How we’re doing: Choo choose a greener way to travel

We’ve already slashed our Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 23 % and Scope 3 by 20 %, funnelling $353,307 in decarbonization projects through our industry-first Carbon Fund in 2024 (for a total of USD 2.23+ Million invested since the Carbon Fund began in 2023).

We’ve been teamed up with our coach partners across Europe to use planet-friendly HVO biofuel wherever it’s available. 65 % of the fuel powering our European trips was HVO (that’s 851,856 litres of cleaner juice), saving us a cool 1,421.55 t of CO₂e in just one year.

In 2024 Contiki added a brand-new rail itinerary into our mix of 8 spectacular train trips. We also removed flights from 5+ itineraries, swapping in train or coach (where it makes sense).

Contiki Chateau in Lyon France

GOAL 2: Source 50% of electricity from renewable sources by 2025: achieved

How we’re doing: Like a bolt from the green

100 % renewable energy runs our London HQ, plus our Contiki-owned Special Stays, from our Austrian Haus Schoneck to the famed Contiki Château.

GOAL 3: Reduce food waste by 50% across all hotels and ships by 2025: ongoing

How we’re doing: Less waste, more taste.

With innovative food-waste detection tech installed, our Château & Haus Schoneck alone have saved the bite-size equivalent of 5,224 meals.

GOAL 4: Increase use of local & organic food products by our supply chain by 2025: achieved

How we’re doing: Eat local, feel flobal

11 local producers and six certified-organic heroes supply our properties. And 83% of Contiki trips dish up at least one local dining experience (ingredients sourced within 30-50 miles).)

GOAL 5: Reduce printed brochures by 50% by 2025: achieved

How we’re doing: That’s what we call a paper cut

Printed brochures? We’ve reduced ‘em 92 % since 2019.

Green Sea Turtle in the water

GOAL 6: Eliminate as many unnecessary single-use plastics from our operations and itineraries: ongoing

How we’re doing: Refills > landfill

Single-use plastic water bottles were pulled from sale in 2019 wherever safe drinking water flows. And across Asia, 20 L refill tanks now live in hotels and coaches, so travellers can top up without the trash.

Coala Make Travel Matter Experience

GOAL 7: Include at least one MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience across 50% of TTC itineraries by 2025: achieved

How we’re doing: Good times, greater impact

86 % of Contiki itineraries pack at least one MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience, from community projects to conservation crusades – crushing our target by 172%

Aerial shot of Albanian beach

GOAL 8: Achieve a 20% increase of itineraries visiting developing regions for select specialist brands by 2025: achieved

How we’re doing: More stamps, more stories

In 2024 welcomed seven new routes into developing regions, sharing the Contiki love further afield, from Albania to Peru. 27 of our trips already visit developing destinations and we have 5+ more in store for 2026 (so stay tuned).

Pride trip

GOAL 9: Increase employee and market sentiment regarding diversity and inclusion across our brands: ongoing

How we’re doing:

Travel as you are. Inclusivity in every itinerary

Our expert Trip Managers are trained on DEI essentials, including workshops for new crew from our LGBTQ+ ambassador Aisha Shaibu-Lenoir. In ‘24 we also expanded our Pride Trips, with Athens Pride joining the line-up in 2025.

Shining the spotlight

In 2024 we relaunched our Travel Project series of short films and editorial articles, focused on spotlighting marginalised voices – from Sámi reindeer herders to Māori storytellers and female & non-binary Glaswegian DJs.

In front of and behind the camera

As well as using under-represented groups behind the camera, such as a Māori production crew for our New Zealand Travel Project entry, we also cast our brand and campaign shoots from past travellers, following rigorous DEI guidelines to ensure our travel community are genuinely represented.

Contiki beach Clean Up

GOAL 10: Complete 30,000 volunteer hours by 2025.

How we’re doing: Give back, get back

In 2024 Contiki crew joined TTC colleagues to clock 8,066 hours in 2024 alone, pushing the total well past the 30k mark.

Delta Game Drive Sunset Elephant

GOAL 11: Ensure all wildlife experiences across TTC brands adhere to our Animal Welfare Policy: achieved

How we’re doing: Animal-friendly, traveller-approved

Every Contiki wildlife experience passes every single point in our rigorous Animal Welfare Policy. No ethical anxieties, just respectful encounters.
