DAY 1 - Arrive Rome

Rome

Welcome to Rome, where historical ruins, renaissance masterpieces, vibrant street life and a romantic perception of life all collide. After meeting our new friends at our hotel, we'll head out for a sightseeing tour, checking our iconic sites such as the Trevi Fountain (flick a coin and get a pic), the Spanish Steps, Piazza Navora and more. Then, stomachs rumbling after smelling all the fresh Italian food wafting out of restaurants and cafes, we'll bond over a 3-course Roman dinner. Delizioso!

INCLUDED EXPERIENCES

  • Peel back the layers of Rome's history on a city walking tour including the Trevi Fountain

DAY 2 - Rome to La Spezia

Rome

After breakfast this morning we'll have a chance to explore more of Rome's ornate piazzas and gorgeous fountains (it's easy to see why this was once the capital of the world). Then, it's time to board a train to La Spezia.

La Spezia

Welcome to the Italian Riviera! This evening is your chance to learn how to make pesto in its spiritual home, guided by local chefs who know this recipe better than anyone. Once you're proud of your creation, they'll toss your handmade pesto together with fresh pasta and serve you a meal in their historic restaurant. It's only been 2 days and you've already fallen head over heels for Italy.

FREE TIME ADD-ONS

  • Learn how to make your own pesto & eat it served with fresh pasta in Cinque Terre

DAY 3 - La Spezia

La Spezia

Today we're headed to Cinque Terre, the glittering star of postcards and insta feeds all over the world. Is there a coastline on earth more enchanting than this? Pastel-hued villages, dramatic terraced cliffs, lush gardens, medieval monuments & pristine waters make for an unmissable experience. We make exploring the '5 lands' even easier, with an unlimited train-and-hike travel card included in the price of your trip, so whether you choose to hike, train, boat or eat your way through Cinque Terre, you'll fall in love with this sun-drenched coast, and so will your Instagram feed.

La Spezia

Arrivederci Italy and a big Bonjour to France! We're headed from the Italian Riviera to the French Riviera, and the ridiculously scenic coastal train ride alone makes the journey worth it.

Nice

We'll enjoy two nights in this playground of the rich and famous. Year round sunshine, beautiful beaches, boulevards and a buzzing street life makes Nice a stand-out in the French Riviera.

DAY 5 - Nice

Nice

Wake up, you're in the French Riviera. Nice! This morning you'll have free time to soak up some rays on one of those iconic blue chairs along the glorious waterfront.  Glamorous and culturally fascinating, as you walk along the harbour and soak up the designer bars and couture shops you'll have the swagger of an A-list celeb. To keep the glamour vibes going, why not opt to head to Monte Carlo casino in Monaco tonight, where you can roll the dice and live the life of the rich and famous?

Montpellier

Graceful, stylish and beautiful, Montpellier is French culture all over. With white sandy beaches, woozy little backstreets and grand promenades, this multicultural place is predominantly made up of students, giving it an energy not usually found in coastal cities. Breathe in the sites of this charming place before we head out for a traditional French dinner of fresh seafood, before watching the world go by with a glass of wine.

DAY 7 - Montpellier to Barcelona

Montpellier

See ya France, we're headed to another intoxicating country this morning after breakfast.

Barcelona

New day, new country, and as we travel south past the snow-capped Pyrenees we'll fall in love with the scenery before reaching one of the world's most uniquely beautiful cities: Barcelona. A seaside metropolis that's heaving with culture, passion and energy, we'll waste no time getting to grips with Spain's stunning second city. On arrival we'll take in the baroque sites such as Gaudi's stunning Sagrada Familia - the unfinished masterpiece still under construction -  Las Ramblas and more. This evening, why not discover why the Spanish are so famous for their fiestas by checking out the local nightlife?

DAY 8 - Barcelona

Barcelona

They say this city sizzles and we couldn't agree more. Today is all yours to explore! For a taste of what you can do, here's just a start of the never-ending list: channel Gaudi at Sagrada Familia, his greatest masterpiece, started in 1882. This labour of love is still not compete, but is still a worthy memory and insta upload. Parc Guell could be next on the list - or maybe take to the backstreets for some endless tapas and paella, washed down with sangria. Fancy cooling down? Head to the golden sands of Barcelona's beach, the cherry on top this incredible city. As a last hoorah, head to our optional flamenco show, where you'll experience this passionate dance up close, before feasting on some local tapas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions group

What documents do I need to travel?

Dependent on where you’re travelling and your nationality, you'll need a valid passport and may also need visas to enter into certain countries - please check this well in advance of your trip departure date. The majority of our Europe trips travel in countries that are covered by the Schengen Agreement which relates to visas. Citizens of many countries - e.g. Australia, New Zealand, United States, Canada - can travel in the Schengen area without a visa. If you require a visa to enter the Schengen area you only need to obtain one visa which will allow you to travel in all Schengen countries. For non-Schengen countries, you may be able to obtain a visa upon arrival, depending on your nationality. Some countries also require passports to have 3-6 months left on them before the given expiry date, so be sure to double check this before booking your travels.

IMPORTANT
1. Visas can take up to six weeks & a fee is normally charged.
2. Failure to obtain all necessary visas could cause you to miss part or all of your trip & will result in you incurring considerable expense & inconvenience.
3. It is better to apply for all visas through your travel agent or local consular services before you leave home.
4. Contiki will provide you with visa contacts from our London base at the Royal National Hotel, if necessary.

What are the luggage restrictions?

On our European trips, you can bring one bag or suitcase of 73cm x 50cm x 25cm (29” x 20” x 10”), with a max weight of 20kg (44lbs) to be stored in the hold & one small day bag to take on board. Your day bag should be a backpack, duffel bag or satchel only (no small luggage cases or suitcases with wheels on board the coach).

What do the Contiki team do?

People are at the heart of everything we do, and our team is what makes our trips the best. Our worldwide On-Road Team, locally based staff & network of Local Guides are all extensively trained & widely travelled, & are the best in the business. But we know it’s not just about training, it’s about passion & our team have it in their blood.
Your Trip Manager is like your walking, talking guidebook – just for you. They plan your itinerary every day, organise your food and accomodation and book your Free Time Add ons, and because they know everything about where you’re going, you will too. Your Drivers are the experts on getting you from A to B efficiently and safely in Europe. They know their way around better than google maps & they’ll drop you at your door & unload your bags for you. Local Guides provide specialist knowledge when you need it and will always help you avoid the tourist traps.

What's not included that I should budget for?

Aside from essentials like flights, how much spending money you’ll need will depend on the duration of the trip and how much you anticipate spending on personal expenses like alcohol or shopping. Before you travel, it’s also a good idea to read up on and get an idea of the Free Time Add-Ons you think you’ll want to do on trip, as these will form part of your overall budget. We’d advise doing some research on your chosen European destinations beforehand, looking at things like:

- Cost of a local lunch

- Cost of a local dinner

- Cost of a local taxi

- Cost of entry to a sightseeing spot

In all areas of the service industry in Europe, from restaurants, bars, hotels & taxis, it is common practice to tip if you feel that the service received has been excellent.
The same goes for your Contiki Team. If you feel that your Trip Manager & Driver’s service has been exceptional, then feel free to tip them if you feel they’ve done a great job. If you choose to tip, we recommend around 2 Euros per day, however whether or not you choose to tip (& how much) is completely up to you.

Will I be able to access WiFi on my trip?

Yes! Our fleet of modern, sleek coaches are kitted out with WiFi in all places except Greece, as are most hotels & hostels across the continent, so you’ll always be able to effortlessly get online and update everyone back home about your incredible adventure.
