Best way to see the Great Barrier Reef

Great Staff and people I had a blast even ended up taking an extra certification on the boat. The hostel is a party hostel so be ready but nights are quite on the boat. The food you are served by pro-dive is awesome

fun and very safe!

This class was thorough and required a lot from its students. I enjoyed the boat setup and all of our dives. But you don't need to bring shoes on the boat because you will be barefoot the whole time, and try to get on of those quick drying towels from kathmandu. None of the cotton towels could dry in time on deck - but those could handle the quick turn around dives. Also, if you get seasick I highly recommend taking dramamine most of the time you are out there. But the night before take it and then again in the morning while boarding. I was able to keep my dosage up and then during the tough drive out to the reef I was fine and didn't get sick. But I did sit at the back of the boat staring at the horizon the whole time. Once we made it to the reef it was easy. But the same for heading back into town - keep your dramamine levels up. I'm prone to get sick but with these tips you should be fine. My dive partner and I rented a dive camera that we really didn't need. We got maybe 2 or three photos that were good, but looking back I would just wait until I'm a more experienced diver to get a nice camera to take photos with. One of my favorite parts of the day was sitting up on deck after the dives to see the stars out there and relax with a beer gossiping about what each person saw that day or what good stories they had.

Not a real contiki tour

This is not a contiki tour. Their is no group, guide or events arraigned. The accommodation is a party hostel that is fine but they put you in rooms that vary from four people to eight and they mix their genders so you never know what your walking into. If you call the contiki people with an enquiry they won't help you because they no nothing as they are not there and do nothing for this tour. The pro dive people are great. You would be better off making your bookings with them directly.

Read before seeing the 2 stars!

The reason why I gave this 2 stars is not because I did not have a good time. It's because this "Contiki" adventure is not at all like my other Contiki trips. In fact there was nothing Contiki about it besides the ease of booking the trip. I was looking forward to the usual meet up and getting to know some awesome people - like all Contiki trips. However, there was no such meet up, in fact the hostel staff was rather clueless to Contiki when I arrived. This trip is through Prodive. They are a very very good company and ran a top notch program. I had incredible instructors, some of the best in the world. I live in Midwest America - far from most dive sites, and this was the place to learn for sure. Like the last post, you spend two days in the classroom and the pool before heading out on the dive boat. My suggestion would be to do the classroom work in your hometown. In retrospect, although the staff was top notch, I could have saved two days of sitting in a classroom on my vacation. One of the fellas on the trip from New York did all his pool work at home - then finished on the boat. Spent those 2 days petting koalas and shit. The diving was probably the highlight of my Australian trip, my second week I spent in southern Australia in Sydney with friends I had met on previous Contikis! So get to know your travel mates! Bring your GoPro - cameras are expensive on the boat. Also be warned - the main hostel in Cairns (Cans) is Gilligans. It was a blast the first night - but the music does not stop until about 4 am - and its bumping. I spent 4 nights there total and by the end I was a bit tired of the music every night - but Im also 28 and old as shit. I dont normally ever write posts - but I hope this info helps some folks thinking about this trip. Like I said I had a blast and give ProDive 5 stars! I was just a bit bummed there wasnt the usual Contiki sort of camaraderie.

Amazing trip, just don't book through Contiki.

Book directly through Pro Dive Cairns, as Contiki adds no value by booking with them. Note that the 'Learn to Dive' trip page on the Contiki website states that the hotel you're staying at is Rydges Esplanade - this is not true, the Contiki accommodation is Gilligan's (backpackers). Meals are not included when you stay at Gilligan's. Contiki didn't communicate to me where I needed to meet the group - I had to phone Pro Dive to arrange it myself. Overall, a disappointing experience with Contiki. I booked through Contiki because I wanted my whole trip arranged for me - this was not what happened. AMAZING trip though, but book directly through Pro Dive and choose your hotel (or backpackers) yourself - you'll also save a lot of money doing it this way.
