DAY 1 - Arrive Lisbon

Lisbon

Meeting in the luscious city of Lisbon we'll admire the Gothic glamour, winding cobbled streets, gorgeous cathedrals and scenic views. But the best way to explore this gastronomic capital is through taste, and we'll bond today over a visit to the Time Out food markets, sampling sardines and bruschetta, Moroccan chicken skewers, duck croquettes and mushroom delicacies, all washed down with beer and the Lisbon speciality: green wine. Afterwards, maybe go for a glass of port in the Bairro Alto and watch the sunset.

Stay

Selina Secret Garden (or similar)

INCLUDED EXPERIENCES

  • Visit Lisbon's famous food markets

DAY 2 - Lisbon to Porto via Fatima and Coimbra

Lisbon

See ya, Lisbon. We'll never forget your culinary and cultural charms.

Fatima

En-route to Porto we've got a few special stopovers, such as the sacred place of miracles: Fatima. Said to be the site where the Virgin Mary appeared to peasant children, Fatima attracts 6 million people a year. Today there are two ginormous basilicas to mark the site.

Coimbra

This lively city is bursting at the seams with historical monuments. It's home to Portugal's oldest university, and when we stop for lunch we'll fall in love with the old stone walls and tumbling terraces of pastel coloured buildings.

Porto

Cruising into the terracotta washed city of Porto, we'll explore this city on foot, seeing all the main sites like the lavish São Fransisco Church and 19th century Palácio de Bolsa, and sneaking in some cheeky port tasting on the way. An optional E-bike tour is on offer, allowing you to breeze through Porto’s iconic sites with the help of a hill-conquering engine when you need that extra push (it’s not cheating if you pretend to pedal and put on your most determined face).

Stay

Selina Porto (or similar)

INCLUDED EXPERIENCES

  • Visit the moving religious site of Fatima

  • Visit the preserved medieval old town of Coimbra

FREE TIME ADD-ONS

  • Take a guided tour of Porto on e-bikes (and breeze over the hills)

    EUR 34.00

DAY 3 - Porto

Porto

Porto is a spectacular city, but it's also very hilly. You'll have the chance to explore the city in your free time, sampling port and wondering the picturesque coastline, before an optional EatWith experience this evening. This brings you into the homes of locals, who host and cook for you for a uniquely authentic dining experience. As well as sampling a delicious array of traditional Portuguese food, you'll sample some port, and hear stories from your hosts about their lives in this spellbinding city.

Stay

Selina Porto (or similar)

FREE TIME ADD-ONS

  • Learn to make Pastel de Nata (custard tarts) with Joana in her home

    EUR 32.00

  • Experience EatWith Porto, dining on traditional Portuguese food inside the homes of locals

    EUR 38.00

DAY 4 - Porto to Santa Cruz via Aveiro to Obidos

Porto

We're saying 'Tchau' to Porto today. After breakfast we're taking the coach towards Santa Cruz.

Aveiro

This mini-Venice is a gorgeous town built on canals. We'll have an optional traditional boat tour to cruise the winding canals, admiring the colourful houses and learning about the area's history.

Obidos

Another stop for lunch lunch, another stunning historic old town to enjoy it in. Obidos will charm us with its whitewashed houses and ruddy blooms of flowers.

Santa Cruz

Located on the glorious shores of Ericeira, on Portugal’s West Coast, Noah’s Surf House has one motto “At Sea We're Home.” That’s why the entrance is on top of the sand, why the windows and balconies face the azure ocean, and why chilled surf culture informs everything they do. Whether you're looking to kick back or get involved with surfing, skating or yoga, this is so much more than just a place to stay.

Stay

Noah Surf House (or similar)

INCLUDED EXPERIENCES

  • Visit canal city of Aveiro, Portugal's 'mini-Venice'

  • Explore the picturesque canals of Aveiro on a traditional moliceiro boat

  • Visit the charming old town of Obidos

DAY 5 - Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz

Portugal’s west coast is one of the best spots in Europe to find perfect surfing conditions for all abilities, and has so many golden beaches that overcrowding never becomes a problem. Take one of Noah’s surfing classes and you'll be using the best gear on the market while being trained up by instructors with more than 15 years of experience, so no matter your skill level, you'll be mastering the waves in no time. If want to hit the waves in a different way, Stand Up Paddle Boarding, or SUP might be for you. It’s just you, your big board and an oar, and as well as being an incredible core strength workout, it’s a fun and unique way to explore the glorious med from an upright perspective. Yoga is an option if you're looking for an activity that is a bit more grounded, or you can simply kick back with a beer and enjoy the sound of the waves gently lapping against the shore.

DAY 6 - Santa Cruz to Lagos via Evora

Santa Cruz

Noah's Surf House - you've been a dream. It's time to drag ourselves away this morning as we head to Lagos.

Evora

Another trip to the past as we head inside the 14th century walls of Evora, home to grandiose medieval cathedrals, roman baths and a spectacular town square. After wondering the cobbled streets we'll head on towards Lagos.

Lagos

This picture perfect port town retains Evora's quaint cobbled lanes but adds a whole bunch of stunning beaches.

Stay

Carvoeiro Plaza (or similar)

INCLUDED EXPERIENCES

  • Visit the town of Evora, one of Portugal's most beautifully preserved medieval towns

DAY 7 - Lagos

Lagos

Today is yours to enjoy Lagos. Play golf, eat, take a boat trip, swim, soak up some rays or enjoy some watersports. The choice is yours in this sun-drenched playground.

Stay

Carvoeiro Plaza (or similar)

DAY 8 - Lagos to Lisbon

Lagos

After breakfast, we have a short drive from Lagos back to Lisbon today. See ya Lagos, thanks for the good times!

Lisbon

Here in Lisbon we'll enjoy more time to explore this fascinating capital with a Street art tour of the Cascais district. Hosted by local residents, this tour showcases the culture of a neighbourhood shaking off old perceptions by creating an urban art gallery unlike anywhere in the world. Later, we'll enjoy an optional farewell feast  - the perfect chance to reflect on how much we've fallen in love with Portugal, and say our sad goodbyes.

Stay

FREE TIME ADD-ONS

  • Enjoy an authentic farewell feast in Lisbon

  • Cascais Street Art Tour

    EUR 15.00

DAY 9 - End Lisbon

Lisbon

Portugal, it's been emotional. Your delicious food, rich culture, paradisaical coastlines and glittering waters will stay in our memories forever. But we'll be back soon enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions group

What health and hygiene protocols are in place on trip?

The health and wellbeing of everyone who travels with Contiki has been, and always will be, our top priority. That’s why we’ve rigorously evaluated our experiences, training and protocols to make sure we not only meet our travellers wellbeing expectations, but exceed them in every single way. We sought guidance from the World Health Organisation and government agencies, and, as members of the World Travel and Tourism Council, we’ve been involved in defining global protocols. Due to our diligent work during this time, we’ve been awarded the WTTC safe travels stamp - meaning we’re a business which has adopted global, standardised health and hygiene protocols. You can find details about how we’re prioritising your wellbeing when you travel with us here.

What documents do I need to travel?

Dependent on where you’re travelling and your nationality, you'll need a valid passport and may also need visas to enter into certain countries - please check this well in advance of your trip departure date. The majority of our Europe trips travel in countries that are covered by the Schengen Agreement which relates to visas. Citizens of many countries - e.g. Australia, New Zealand, United States, Canada - can travel in the Schengen area without a visa. If you require a visa to enter the Schengen area you only need to obtain one visa which will allow you to travel in all Schengen countries. For non-Schengen countries, you may be able to obtain a visa upon arrival, depending on your nationality. Some countries also require passports to have 3-6 months left on them before the given expiry date, so be sure to double check this before booking your travels.

IMPORTANT
1. Visas can take up to six weeks & a fee is normally charged.
2. Failure to obtain all necessary visas could cause you to miss part or all of your trip & will result in you incurring considerable expense & inconvenience.
3. It is better to apply for all visas through your travel agent or local consular services before you leave home.
4. Contiki will provide you with visa contacts from our London base at the Royal National Hotel, if necessary.

What are the luggage restrictions?

On our European trips, you can bring one bag or suitcase of 73cm x 50cm x 25cm (29” x 20” x 10”), with a max weight of 20kg (44lbs) to be stored in the hold & one small day bag to take on board. Your day bag should be a backpack, duffel bag or satchel only (no small luggage cases or suitcases with wheels on board the coach).

What do the Contiki team do?

People are at the heart of everything we do, and our team is what makes our trips the best. Our worldwide On-Road Team, locally based staff & network of Local Guides are all extensively trained & widely travelled, & are the best in the business. But we know it’s not just about training, it’s about passion & our team have it in their blood.
Your Trip Manager is like your walking, talking guidebook – just for you. They plan your itinerary every day, organise your food and accomodation and book your Free Time Add ons, and because they know everything about where you’re going, you will too. Your Drivers are the experts on getting you from A to B efficiently and safely in Europe. They know their way around better than google maps & they’ll drop you at your door & unload your bags for you. Local Guides provide specialist knowledge when you need it and will always help you avoid the tourist traps.

What's not included that I should budget for?

Aside from essentials like flights, how much spending money you’ll need will depend on the duration of the trip and how much you anticipate spending on personal expenses like alcohol or shopping. Before you travel, it’s also a good idea to read up on and get an idea of the Free Time Add-Ons you think you’ll want to do on trip, as these will form part of your overall budget. We’d advise doing some research on your chosen European destinations beforehand, looking at things like:

- Cost of a local lunch

- Cost of a local dinner

- Cost of a local taxi

- Cost of entry to a sightseeing spot

In all areas of the service industry in Europe, from restaurants, bars, hotels & taxis, it is common practice to tip if you feel that the service received has been excellent.
The same goes for your Contiki Team. If you feel that your Trip Manager & Driver’s service has been exceptional, then feel free to tip them if you feel they’ve done a great job. If you choose to tip, we recommend around 2 Euros per day, however whether or not you choose to tip (& how much) is completely up to you.

Will I be able to access WiFi on my trip?

Yes! Our fleet of modern, sleek coaches are kitted out with WiFi in all places except Greece, as are most hotels & hostels across the continent, so you’ll always be able to effortlessly get online and update everyone back home about your incredible adventure.

What are Contiki’s sustainability credentials?
