DAY 1 - Arrive Athens

Athens

Welcome to Athens, Greek adventurers! The clock starts now on uncovering this ancient country and all its quirks. We're calling it now, that this trip is THE ancient history lovers dream. Settle in to your hotel before catching up with the crew, where a traditional Athens affair is on the cards for those wanting to get straight down to the business of being cultural. On our optional dinner we'll head to the city's old town and dinner, traditional dancing as you feast your eyes (and stomach) with mouthwatering Greek tastes, under the watchful eye of the Acropolis to complete the scene. We can't think of a better way to get right into the Greek way of life.

INCLUDED EXPERIENCES

  • Visit the famous Plaka area

FREE TIME ADD-ONS

  • Feast on authentic Greek dishes and see traditional Greek dancing in the heart of Athens' historic Plaka district

    EUR 40.00

DAY 2 - Athens to Olympia via Corinth and Mycenae

Athens

Not a second of today will go to waste. Europe’s oldest city will unfold itself this morning as we take to the Parthenon and the Acropolis with the knowledge of a local, then explore the first modern Olympic Stadium from the 1896 Games. That's some really old Olympic vibes right there.

Corinth

Rugged mountains, cypress trees and citrus groves will pepper our pretty tour from Athens to Corinth, where we will stop to get a look at a man-made canal that squeezes ships through its tight cliffs in what seems like an impossible feat.

Mycenae

What was once a military hotspot is now a jaw-dropping archaeological site amidst the mountain ranges of Greece. Our Trip Manager will uncover the 4,000 year history of Mycenae and Agamemnon’s Palace in a tale of heroics, myths and curses.

Olympia

And so the historical uncoverings continue as we land in Olympia, the place where the Olympic Games were birthed, and what is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

INCLUDED EXPERIENCES

  • Locally guided tour of the awe-inspiring Ancient Greek monuments including entry to the Acropolis and Parthenon

DAY 3 - Olympia to Delphi

Olympia

Fun fact: the first Olympic Games was held in 776BC, let's just let that number sink in for a moment...Wow. Today our Local Guide will show us all the important sites of those games, giving you the chance to sit in the 45,000 seat stadium where it actually first took place. If that's not a spine-tingling moment, we don't know what is. We'll wrap it up at the Temple of Hera (Queen of the Greek Gods), and place where the Olympic flame is lit every four years. We'll also visit the ruins of Zeus' temple before we head off on our journey, where you'll be sure to feel the vibes of one of the most well known Greek gods.

Delphi

The sacred lands of Delphi will be ours this afternoon, again allowing us the chance to uncover world history right here in Greece. Despite being a place of monumental importance, it happens to have a cute little bar scene, and is a great place to sample the national drink of ouzo.

INCLUDED EXPERIENCES

  • Guided tour including Olympic Stadium and Temples of Hera and Zeus

DAY 4 - Delphi to Athens

Delphi

Through the limestone columns of the Sanctuary of Apollo, we continue tapping into what was once the centre of the universe for Ancient Greeks. The remains of this Doric style building stands tall with it's remaining 6 (out of an original 15) pillars, and is the perfect spot to absorb the last bit of beauty that is the slopes of Mt. Parnassus before we jump on the trail back to Athens.

Athens

Well there you have it, the true scope of mainland Greece's magnificence filed neatly into four incredible days. Make sure you get a good night's sleep tonight, cos this party ain't over yet. Tomorrow we set our sights seaward. Those islands aren't going to sail themselves!

INCLUDED EXPERIENCES

  • See where the Ancient Greeks would go to speak with the Oracle in Delphi

DAY 5 - Athens

Athens

This morning we'll gather round in the Greek capital with a free day for you to explore sites of ancient Athens, before we get ready to set sail & conquer the Mediterranean. How about a hike up to the Acropolis, and snap a pic of the Parthenon? Or get a glimpse of the Golden Mask of King Agamemnon at the National Archaeology Museum, or stop for a spot of lunch at the Plaka?

DAY 6 - Athens to Aegina

Athens

These islands aren't going to sail themselves! Board our yacht, meet your fellow sailors and get ready to drift out of Athens. You've heard it here first, this trip is made for those that love to chill, swim, eat and repeat while getting up on the water like a boss. All aboard, let's do this!

Aegina

Apart from being jaw-droppingly beautiful and packed with history, this island is pretty as a picture, and offers all of the good things you've come accustomed to, like beach loungers, clear blue waters and local vibes that we know and love. What else do you need to know? Aegina knows how to throw a party. Which makes it the perfect spot for our first evening.

DAY 7 - Aegina to Hydra

Aegina

From Aegina we set sail for the Hollywood hangout of Hydra.

Hydra

This vehicle free destination is a great spot to stretch out those legs. With cathedrals, monasteries, fresh seafood and amazing nightlife, it’s impossible to be bored on this jewel of an island. Grab some eats and get on your dancing shoes.

DAY 8 - Hydra to Plaka

Hydra

The yachting life will feel all very perfect & natural this morning as we anchor up yet again & cruise the Med in search of our next destination.

Plaka

Plaka Leonidion calls us back to Greece's mainland for a day in which swimming in tranquil bays is high priority. This charming seaside town will make you wish you were of Greek heritage as you settle into life on deck once again, and work oh so hard on that magificent tan. Aaaaand, relax.

DAY 9 - Plaka to Spetses

Plaka

Plaka will leave us feeling all inspired by what the Greek coastline has on offer - so we'll stick to it! Making our way to Spetses little further in the bay.

Spetses

DAY 10 - Spetses to Ermioni

Spetses

Kounoupi islet is ours this morning, known as a 'must stop' amongst the savvy yachting community. The relaxing summer vibes continue as we head to Dhokos, home to a 4500 year old shipwreck, offically the oldest in the world.

Ermioni

With its sloped hillsides and quaint port, Ermioni is a charming tumble of traditional architecture and natural beauty. We’ll soak up the peaceful vibes ready for more adventures tomorrow.

DAY 11 - Ermioni to Poros

Ermioni

See ya, Ermioni, we’ve got more historical artefacts and endless coastlines ahead of us.

Poros

This vibrant settlement has stacks of pastel houses to admire, alongside a dreamy hillside clock tower.

DAY 12 - Poros to Athens

Poros

Our final sea journey onboard the boat that we have come to know as home. From Poros we set sail for Athens, perhaps with a little tear in our eye.

Athens

Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened! Maybe you should just book another trip to ease the pain…

DAY 13 - Depart Athens

Athens

Back on Athenian shores where the adventure commenced 8 days ago, we'll say our farewells & wrap up the trip. Dry those salty tears, and make sure you swap deets to plan your next sunny escape soon...

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions group

What documents do I need to travel?

Dependent on where you’re travelling and your nationality, you'll need a valid passport and may also need visas to enter into certain countries - please check this well in advance of your trip departure date. The majority of our Europe trips travel in countries that are covered by the Schengen Agreement which relates to visas. Citizens of many countries - e.g. Australia, New Zealand, United States, Canada - can travel in the Schengen area without a visa. If you require a visa to enter the Schengen area you only need to obtain one visa which will allow you to travel in all Schengen countries. For non-Schengen countries, you may be able to obtain a visa upon arrival, depending on your nationality. Some countries also require passports to have 3-6 months left on them before the given expiry date, so be sure to double check this before booking your travels.

IMPORTANT
1. Visas can take up to six weeks & a fee is normally charged.
2. Failure to obtain all necessary visas could cause you to miss part or all of your trip & will result in you incurring considerable expense & inconvenience.
3. It is better to apply for all visas through your travel agent or local consular services before you leave home.
4. Contiki will provide you with visa contacts from our London base at the Royal National Hotel, if necessary.

What are the luggage restrictions?

On our European trips, you can bring one bag or suitcase of 73cm x 50cm x 25cm (29” x 20” x 10”), with a max weight of 20kg (44lbs) to be stored in the hold & one small day bag to take on board. Your day bag should be a backpack, duffel bag or satchel only (no small luggage cases or suitcases with wheels on board the coach).

What do the Contiki team do?

People are at the heart of everything we do, and our team is what makes our trips the best. Our worldwide On-Road Team, locally based staff & network of Local Guides are all extensively trained & widely travelled, & are the best in the business. But we know it’s not just about training, it’s about passion & our team have it in their blood.
Your Trip Manager is like your walking, talking guidebook – just for you. They plan your itinerary every day, organise your food and accomodation and book your Free Time Add ons, and because they know everything about where you’re going, you will too. Your Drivers are the experts on getting you from A to B efficiently and safely in Europe. They know their way around better than google maps & they’ll drop you at your door & unload your bags for you. Local Guides provide specialist knowledge when you need it and will always help you avoid the tourist traps.

What's not included that I should budget for?

Aside from essentials like flights, how much spending money you’ll need will depend on the duration of the trip and how much you anticipate spending on personal expenses like alcohol or shopping. Before you travel, it’s also a good idea to read up on and get an idea of the Free Time Add-Ons you think you’ll want to do on trip, as these will form part of your overall budget. We’d advise doing some research on your chosen European destinations beforehand, looking at things like:

- Cost of a local lunch

- Cost of a local dinner

- Cost of a local taxi

- Cost of entry to a sightseeing spot

In all areas of the service industry in Europe, from restaurants, bars, hotels & taxis, it is common practice to tip if you feel that the service received has been excellent.
The same goes for your Contiki Team. If you feel that your Trip Manager & Driver’s service has been exceptional, then feel free to tip them if you feel they’ve done a great job. If you choose to tip, we recommend around 2 Euros per day, however whether or not you choose to tip (& how much) is completely up to you.

Will I be able to access WiFi on my trip?

Yes! Our fleet of modern, sleek coaches are kitted out with WiFi in all places except Greece, as are most hotels & hostels across the continent, so you’ll always be able to effortlessly get online and update everyone back home about your incredible adventure.
