The tour was good, and a nice way to tour New Zealand, especially with a group.
There were lots of things I liked and some things I disliked about the tour. I didn't like that the tour was modular, as in people get on and off at different points. This was not made clear to me when I purchased the tour. There seems to be less unity among the group that way. There were also too many optional activities. If you didn't sign up for optionals, you wouldn't be doing much on the tour. There were dinners that were really core parts of the tour that should have been included, such as the cruise and the skyline dinner. Some of the accommodations were very basic with no AC.
I also thought a lot of the north island stops were a bit boring including Okahune, Wellington, and Christ Church. I would have rather just flown past those to the south island. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is one of the best hikes in the world, and you stop at the town next to it, but there is no opportunity or time to do the hike.
Good things: NZ has lots of adventure options and natural wonders to see. The South Island was the best and also Hobitton around Auckland (if you're into that). Lord of the Rings shooting locations are at almost every stop. It's hot in the north and cooler with more rain forest, snow, and glaciers in the South. Modular tour allows flexibility for those that are interested in that type of tour. The contiki tour manager and bus driver were excellent and professional as usual. Some may like that much of the tour is "optional": it does allow for it to start out at a cheaper cost.
