INTRODUCTION TO SHANGHAI

With its ancient roots and modern outlook, East meets West in fast-paced Shanghai, China. Learn about the dynamic 6000-year history of this incredible city at the Shanghai Museum. Housing ancient costumes, artefacts and artworks, walk through the different historic periods of China, from its great dynasties to its colonisation by the French, at this informative museum. When it comes to the evolution of the city itself, see how the cityscape has changed in photos at the Shanghai History Museum.

Once you’ve got a good grip on Chinese history, you’ll probably want to get stuck into exploring the city itself. Be transported back in time as you walk through the Yuyuan Gardens, getting a taste of the beauty and extravagance of the Ming Dynasty palaces, before taking a peak into 19th century Shanghai in the tiny alleyway of Tianzifang. Zoom right back to the 21st century on a trip on the maglev train in The Bund Sightseeing Tunnel, marvelling at the lightshow that accompanies this trip. Next, shoot up the Pearl Tower to jump on a virtual-reality rollercoaster through the city skyline, before taking a snap of the vistas over the Huangpu River.

If you’re visiting Shanghai in springtime, be amazed by how the pink peach blossoms bring life to the city. You can see these bursting beauties in Jing’an Park, before walking across the street to explore the grand Jing’an Temple.

If all the exploring is making you hungry, Shanghai’s many amazing restaurants and street vendors will be waiting to fix that. Tuck into xiaolong bao, Shanghai’s favourite dumplings, before biting into some crispy, stinky tofu. Renowned for how it cooks the purple vegetable, make sure you order some braised eggplant before setting off on your next adventure – we promise it’ll be one of your new-favourite dishes.

With so many things to do in Shanghai, let the sights, sounds and smells of the city delight you.
