Despite appearances, this little nation packs a punch, both culturally and politically. Discover the amazing history of this resilient country as you lap up as much as you can about the Vietnam War. Once you’ve explored the south, jump on a train and head north towards Hoi An. This stunning city is UNESCO World Heritage-listed, and with its quaint, low-density urban design and old-school architecture, you’re sure to fall for its charms. If you get your timing right, you might be able to experience the Hoi An Lantern Festival, a monthly event that sees thousands of paper lanterns released into the night sky to honour the full moon.
Hitch a ride on a cargo boat and head north up the Mekong River, where you’ll (hopefully) get somewhere close to Hanoi. Once you’ve downed a bowl of hot pho and perused the city streets, go east towards Halong Bay. The beauty of its emerald-green waters and limestone islands will take your breath away. Snorkel or kayak your way around the islands, before returning to shore via junk boat.
With so much to learn, so many regions to explore and so many good things to eat, you’ll fall in love with vivacious Vietnam.
