TRAVEL IN COLOMBIA

From the sounds of carnival drums to the tastes of banana-wrapped tamales, there’s so much to see and do when you visit Colombia. Learn about the history of this vivacious country at the Colombian National Museum, with a collection that dates back to 10,000 BC. Uncover the stories of its ancient peoples at the Museo de Oro, Bogota’s Gold Museum, as you gaze at the beauty of their ancient jewellery and ceremonial artefacts.

If you want to get stuck into nature, explore Colombia’s beautiful backyard by trekking the Cocora Valley. Learn about how the nation’s famous coffee beans are grown and harvested in Eje Cafetero, while being blown away by the Valley’s beautiful wax palm trees and Andean backdrop. Hike up the mountains of Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta to reach Teyuna, the Lost City. Marvel at the complex architecture and design of this ancient city, built in 800 AD. For beauty enthusiasts, soak up all the mineral goodness at the Totumo Volcano’s mud baths, which (supposedly) have dermatological benefits, before wandering around the colourful streets of Old Town Cartagena.

If you’re looking for a good time, Colombia really delivers. From its exuberant nightlife to its extravagant festivals, there are so many opportunities to party with the locals. If you’re lucky enough to be in the country in late February, make sure you put the Carnaval de Barranquilla at the top of your list. This carnival celebration is the second-biggest in the world – meaning you can expect one hell of a good time. If you’re around in June, dance to a mix of Latin and African beats at the Carnaval de Diablo in Riosucio, where everyone runs around in disguise wearing Devils’ masks.

For art lovers, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to art museums. From the Museo Botero to the Museum of Modern Art of Medellín Colombia, lap up as much as you can about Colombian and Latin American art from the 19th century and beyond. You’ll also fall in love with the streets of Bogotá, which is littered with more than 5000 street art murals.

There’s so many things to do in Colombia, and you can experience best of this colourful country with Contiki.
